I'm in the same boat. I want to get an exhaust (mostly for the sound) and I want to be loud w/o having straight pipes on it. I've read the Magnaflow cat-back is quiet?? I really want a Corsa or Borla Cat-Back but to my knowledge neither make one for the Impala.
it will be on the expensive side, go custom. no one has ever done corsa, i think itd sound sick!
I have cheap Thrush welded mufflers with the res removed and get complements quite a bit. I would like to remove my cat as well but the cost of the catless dp and tuner to get rid of the cel is a bit much given I just put in a new "used" motor and rebuilt trans.

I think I decided on an exhaust. Gonna keep the stock mufflers, and get an electric cut-out from DMH right after the Res, heard a couple of them and they sound nasty. Now I gotta find someone to weld it and wire it.
