If you can find aftermarket OE replacements, those would be the best to modify. They're sealed w silicone, whereas the original GM headlights use a hard plastic sealant. The silicone melts much easier and you'll do less damage when opening them.
The alternative is to use an adjustable heat gun and do it that way. Makes them easier to handle when compared to "hot out of the oven"....just gotta be careful and never leave it on one section too long, or you'll cause spiderwebbing on the lens.

i went the buffalo ss way as well but i got a light tint on my headlights cause of yellow hazy crap that was on the top and front of the headlights..
although id like the halo lights cause of the projectors, i think these do look better, keeps that clean stock look but with a custom look..

Goat, you pretty much nailed that right there. nice job on the light tint/painted lights. i usually hate the way dark tinted lights look but i'm actually impressed by how clean those look.
