Default TAP Shift

VERY STUPID QUESTION....but, how exactly do you use it LMAO!! Does the display show when to shift like in a Manual?? I have never driven a manual or a car in TAP for that matter. I kind of know when to upshift, but when do I downshift?

Another stupid question lol... Is it better on our tranny to use TAP rather than normal automatic?

ok so with tapshift its pretty much just a "feel" for it, you can shift low or shift high, you can down shift at higher rpm to slow you down or just downshift at low rpm, its really just something you get the feel for i guess. sorry if you dont understand but its hard to explain haha

It definately won't upshift, lol. It will just let you bounce off the rev limiter all day. It will downshift when you decelerate and keep the engine from stalling.

A lot guys use it to hold 2nd gear at the strip, since the stock tune short shifts 2nd.

I use it mostly to hold 1st or 2nd when going around corners or highway entrance ramps that I know that I'm going to accelerate out of. Saves the transmission from an extra hard shift, and I don't have to wait for it to happen (although my TEP transmission shifts really fast). I also use it going down steep hills to save my brakes.

So it automatically downshifts for you?

Yes.

But it downshifts at relatively low speeds. If you're not paying attention you could be stuck in a high gear when you need to punch it.

it will downshift for you, but at very low speeds(under 10kmh atleast, 2-1) however it will not upshift for you and it will not let you manually downshift at too high of an rpm.

i have been told it wears the clutches out faster when you use tap but i still use it when im racing and going down big hills and it does down shift for you. and it will downshift 4-3 automatically for you in you give it alot of gas. if you dont up shift and wait to long it boggs the motor down till you up shift. and when you down shift it will not let you over rev the motor, like from 2-1 you can not down shift above 2000 rpm. in tap first gear is shorter but second is longer like i can take second to like 97-99 mph in tap and in regular auto its like 89-91 mph when it shifts

Don't you own one of these Grand Prix GXPs? Did yours not come with Tapshift? I thought they all came with this option.

Haven't you ever driven a car with a manual transmission?

????????

I rarely use it as well.

Another thing to be cautious of is that it's backwards from logical use IMO. I would expect hitting the pad towards your body would be the upshift and hitting it away would be downshift... quite the opposite... I don't really use it because I find myself hitting it the wrong way, but as mentioned above, the car won't really let you do major harm to itself...
Wonder if there's a way to change that...

First of all, read my first post. Second, I didn't ask if anyone has TAP, all I was asking is how you use it exactly.

And to everyone else, thanks for the input

i have always thought it was backwards the only other advice i can give you is to just drive with it. it will not let you hurt the car (over revving)

Don't try to cover up the fact that you either didn't read the post or didn't fully comprehend it. Keep on with the name calling and we'll have problems.

What can I say? Would I be banned from life for being myself in the real world. Why is it any different here? If I am attacked for saying something, I will stand up for myself and apologize if merited. In this case I was jumped upon for sharing an opinion. Excuse the hell outta me. If you can't take it, don't call yourself a man. Don Rickles should be banned from life.

I don't use it much in a straight line, like others have said to hold it in second gear longer if you're drag racing. I use mine the most when I'm doing some backroad corner carving, as it helps you to keep your revs up when entering/exiting a corner. It uses engine torque to help you brake coming into a turn, and keeps the rpm's higher so you're into the torque curve when accelerating out of a turn.

If you try to downshift at too high of a speed, you will hear a chime from the DIC, alerting you that it won't downshift because you are going to fast for the gear you are trying to downshift into. As far as upshifting, as others have said, it will just bounce off the rev limiter if you don't upshift before about 5600 RPM.

Hope that helps.
