Oil not oil lubricates, it cools. Ever heard of oil piston jet pistons?
LS7 and most boosted/high rpm engines have these bad boys. Really helps to prevent detonation and piston scuffing.
Image on the left is without jets and the image on the right is with.
Design
My oil got up to 258* today, with a water temp of 205*(stock T-stat) Not the end of the world but I'm going to fix it. Too hot of oil is bad and too cold of oil is bad. This is why I am going to utilize the thermostatic switch. my dashawk shows a 300* limit so I'm sure the DIC will throw a code just before temps get that hot.
I'm looking for a cooler runing engine, with longer lasting oil. Also.. using a oil cooler might allow me to use a little more timing down low with a leaner A/F up top. FWD just creates too much heat for my liking, due to everything being up front and in a confined place.

Catch can will help to stop the oil from being burned from the PCV, but the DOD will still cause issues internally. Also.. the catch can will fill with unusable oil mixed with water (condinsation) so your still going to be losing oil.

Just check your only after 3000 miles. With DOD and no catch can I had to add 1qt. I usally changed the filter too (AC/Delco only!) so I'd add a qt and a 1/2.
No big deal really..I hate our small *** oil filters. I don't trust them.
With my DOD delete and catch can I haven't lost a drop at 5000

im using valvoline syn power 5w30, but ya that is rediculous. No blue smoke, but when I pulled that #4 plug it was covered in oil residue and the threads were soaked in it. I dont know what I want to spend money on, so for now im just gonna maintain the oil level well and save for a tuner, will the predator disable DOD? wont need the tuner for anything but that.....

I'm not trying to be a salesman LOL..
Definitely look into some GM topend cleaner though. I really think you might have a gummed up piston ring. GM can do this for you. It is a pain!
When I first pulled my heads off last year to replace my collapsed lifter, I noticed the pistons were covered with oil and the intake manifold, when turned upright... dripped oil.
When I did my cam swap and pulled the heads back off again, the pistons looked much cleaner. (LS1 intake with Lew non DOD tune) The intake still had oil in it, from the PCV. This is why I use a catch can now.
Try running some fuel cleaner every now and then too. To help keep the combustion chambers clean. I use seafoam.

but why wouldn't you want to do anything else with it and gain yourself some more giddy-up??? you have to install one of the performance tunes anyway in order for the DOD to be disabled...
