Question Trans or TC?

2006 Monte Carlo SS
125,xxx miles.

Just looking for some opinons on whether or not you guys think its the trans or the torque converter.

All started about 4 months ago during a period of overheating problems thanks to me blowing the water pump out of commission at one of the local cruises (Its okay, that Mustang was asking for it). During the week the car ran after the cruise with a failing water pump during periods of overheating that was significant slippage between 1-2. After I replaced the water pump the car ran fine up until 2 months ago. 2 months ago there were signs of intermittent slippage and hard shifting up and down between 1st and 2nd. Also off and on periods of revving up to 2500-3000ish before "clunking" into gear began 2 months ago.

2 weeks ago it go worse. Cruising anywhere around 40 and anywhere around 70 on the highway resulted in major "gear hunting", enough to almost rock you back and forth in the car. Only at the mentioned speeds however. Once this began it didnt go away but there wasnt alot of slippage in and out of 1-2 at the time, fairly hard shifts however.

The gear hunting problem persisted intermittently but at times wasnt heavy.
No excessive revving up or down at this time either

Christmas Eve morning as im rounding a corner heading for work while getting up to the speed limit at right around 35 it slipped out of gear completely and just revved. It only goes back into gear once the car is completely stopped, put it park, and keyed off. After that time the car will shift into either R or D but anything over 3,000 rpm in drive results with the vehicle popping out of gear. While in drive in the short amount of time the car will move forward under its own power a whining noise can be heard. Whining noise does not persist in park or neutral however.

That brings us to the 27th. The car has no movement forward or backwards now no matter what. No 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or Reverse. No more whining noise can be heard either.

So what do you guys think? Trans or TC? Im leaning towards trans failure but unsure right now.

That's what I'd say. And while you're in there do the converter also.

Our trans are known to have multiple issues and our torque converters allow for slippage and release there material and are known for ballooning, replace both as others suggested as far as your exact problem sounds like your transmission has lost its forward seal completely/no pressure or something has happened to the pump but really no telling
