Confused. Which transgo shift kit is right??

I've got a 2006 GXP and I'm wanting to install a shift kit. The car does have the TapShift. From what I've read there could be different kits due to the TapShift. Could someone hook me up with some info on this? I just need to know which kit to get. Thanks.

This is the one I used, it says

FITS: 4T65E 97-08 "Including Volvo 4T65E" NOTE: TipTronic units SK 4T65E Kit will work except for Boost Valve assembly.

I think the boost valve is in the valve body and I didn't remove that. Seemed to firm up the shift a little. Lots of people on here have Transgo, someone will probably chime in who knows more. Easy install. Good luck

Ok. That's the one I got. I appreciate the feedback.

TEP sells a new sonnax boost valve assembly that serves as an upgrade that I believe you can use with the transgo shift kit.

I am doing a TransGo shift kit in the wife's 08 GP GXP. I have a couple of questions.

So will the sonnax boost valve work in a GXP with tap shift?
Is boost valve necessary?
Is there any other parts I should be ordering with the kit?

Thanks in advance for any help. Been researching for hours and not finding the answers I'm looking for.

So, common misconception about sonnax parts and shift kits is that they are a "performance" application, when merely all they do is correct design flaws from the OEM for the trans. While I can't really speak to exactly what you will need as I don't know what kind of condition the parts are in your trans, if your just doing valve body upgrades, TEP sells the shift kit with the required parts you will need to replace to get that far into the trans and reassemble again. As far as the boost valve goes, it's a linear increase in line pressure that helps deal with clutch slippage issues from inadequate line pressure from the factory. Sonnax has a WIDE variety of replacement hard parts for the 4t65e, that you can use all depending on how worn out the trans is. One of the things to look at is the "afl valve", while you wont have the tooling required to do the sonnax kit if it is worn, TEP sells the superior kit which is all toolless. All of these parts address line pressure issues.

Is this located in the valve body? While no special tools may be required to install this, most of the inexpensive shift kits don't really get into the valve body. I only used the springs and spacers from my Trans-Go kit, which is what I believe most do as anything more requires dissembling the valve body. Can you confirm if these can be installed without major disassembly or is that the case with these parts. Thanks

The accumulator for the transgo shift kit is accessable easily by dropping the pan, but the line pressure booster kit and the AFL valve (the one that normally wears out and causes low line pressure) are in the valve body. Best diagram I could find for the line pressure booster kit from sonnax is this..the AFL valve is shown in one of the teardown videos i posted, ill have to find it.

no problem, you guys are ambitious with your transmissions, im leaving that stuff up to the pro's. lol

rottonj May 27, 2015 11:01 AM

Not me. I installed the easy part, and it did very little. In the past I've always used B+M shift improver or Transpacks in my cars. This is only the 2nd Transgo kit I've used. Its totally different and not apples to apples but those kits ripped the tires on a gear shift. Wasn't expecting that out of this after reading the reviews anyway, but it would have been nice. My trans is probably too far gone for that to be a good thing anyway lol.

Here's the one I bought. $37.95 plus free shipping and it shipped rather fast.

Hows it coming with that transmission? Did you do the cooler and shift kit yet?

GXP25 May 30, 2015 05:07 PM

Speaking of the transmission problems in general, is there anything special in TEP Stage 1 High Performance complete kit that cannot be pieced together separately or locally?

The kit for reference: http://shop.tripleedgeperformance.co...e-Kits_c10.htm

I found a local shop that seems knowledgeable about these transmissions and is kind of skeptical of what Dave has to offer. They're essentially saying that there's nothing too special about what he's including in this base kits.

If I bring them the transmission out of the car and the parts, they'll charge me 5 hours of labor at $75 per hour.

Well I can speak from experience when I tell you that dave is a top notch guy over there, he's pretty much a one many army from what I know, which is why the transmissions have a bit of a long turn around time. But his rebuilds are impeccable and the parts that he offers are all top notch quality.

As far as whether or not what he does is "special" or not, thats a matter of opinion. Aside from the 300M input shaft, all of the other parts from the line pressure booster kit, to shift kit, and the borg warner high energy frictions and upgrades to the input clutch pack clearances, billet apply pistons, and 7/8" chain drive upgrade, all have been around for quite a while through transmission parts suppliers. I bought his stage 1 kit along with the 7/8" drive chain set and 3.29 gears from him just because its such a comprehensive kit that supplies EXACTLY what i was looking for in a high performance build. The borg warner frictions and steels are far superior to the raybestos zpack from everything I have been told by local trans shops and through my own research, so you can expect that anything you buy from him transmission wise will be of the utmost highest quality.

Here's a pic of the stage 1 kit and chain drive upgrade, my trans is actually at my local shop now getting all of these parts installed.

I think Dave at TEP is probably one of the best, but that doesn't mean any reliable transmission shop couldn't supply most of the parts or handle these rebuilds. You got 186k out of your stock transmission and your car has no mods. Why are you considering this? Are you planning on modding the car in the future? If the answer is no just have this transmission shop go thru it, install the shift kit yourself as well as the cooler and be done with it.

Could you possibly bullet all of that please? That way I could source the off-the-shelf parts myself and stick with the TEP-only parts from TEP. That 300 M input shaft is tempting and I've got everything (except a camshaft) to make some power. I was thinking 350+ crank HP range: LS2 intake manifold, LS2 throttle body, LS3 injectors, and eventually some headers and rockers.

I installed the shift kit and cooler two weekends ago and after a few days, the temps started climbing again. I saw 255°F before I parked it. My torque converter is shot, so while I'm in there, I'd like to make it somewhat bullet proof for my rather modest engine aspirations.

Good deal, that will be good with your mod list. I have had good results so far with the cooler. Last Friday it was 95 degrees out, I got stuck in rush hour traffic with a dump truck plastering thru a guardrail accident thrown in. Traffic was creeping for 45+ minutes, temp never got over 186 degrees.
