Give me the low down on the Grand Prix GXP
Ive come across a 08 Grand Prix GXP with 58k, I think for a good deal, what do you guys think its worth? what should I be looking for special to the GXP model? WE actually have a 06 GT and love it, wasn't looking for this but I want another car around to keep miles off my new Sierra and it came up. Speaking of which what kinda mileage do these cars get?
Thanks
Thanks
I may not get an amen on this post, but here are my thoughts as I recently purchased one a few months ago (2008 GXP with 100k).
The interior and exterior are/were in good shape and I have still found no evidence of a wreck on it + it had a great carfax, so I decided to go for it. It hit all the high points to what I was looking for:
I have noticed a few things that seem to be "common" issues on this car and they have came to light within the last 6,000 miles.
I have owned 10+ cars, all with mileage from 20k-350k with multiple GM, Honda, and Ford mixed. I have always had the most "annoying" problems from GM products and quickest signs of wear, and the GXP is one of them. I drive the GXP easier than any other car I have ever drove.
That is just my perspective.

- 4 Door (family)
- V8 (fun)
- Decent Gas Mileage
- Decent Appearance
- Fun to Drive
- Nice cost for all of the above

- Transmission are weak - I just replaced mine last month.

- TC/Stability wires and harness fail
- Wheel hubs seems to be a common problem
- Suspension pop (again something I have noticed on here)
- Lifter tick on cold start-up is already occurring
- DOD seems to have issues
- Wiring problems seem to be a bit more problematic (personal opinion)

I own an 07 GP GXP with about 41K on it and it has been super so far, no issues but of course it has low mileage.
My cousin owns an 08 GXP with over 85K and no issues either. but as a prevent he did a DOD delete with a tune and also a modded tranny upgrade (plus other go fast and handling mods and he reports now its faster and handles better than his stock G8GT)
I plan to get details of his mods and will consider them for my GXP.
Also owned an 08 Impala SS it was good, except the DOD had an issue and it started using oil... I understand GM has a fix for this now.
I have owned approx 36 vehicles in my life (yes I am old) and out of these 25 have been GM and they have been the most reliable and less "needy" than most of my others.
Just another perspective from a car guy

My gxp has 180k on it and got it with 142k. Only issues i've had that are common issues would be the tc/abs harness. My abs/sability/tc lights are always on. Other than that not much has gone wrong and I drive the crap out of this thing haha. I love it and it has been a blast for the past 3 years.
I would say there is a good chance you will have to replace the transmission at some point. I had to replace the Trans on mine about a year and a half after I bought it. I had to change my front wheel hubs as well. I Installed Moog wheel hubs and they have been great for 2.5 years now.
WTF you buy that thing yet?
Is there an ad you can link to to see the car you are considering?
When I bought my 08 in the summer of 2013... it had 100,000 miles on it(currently has about 129,000 miles)... I paid $8000 plus 13% tax CAN dollars. I saw an internet ad for it at about 3pm one day, and, bought it the next day at about 3pm again. I certainly did not wait a week.
I knew what it was when I bought it but to be honest... I never imagined it would turn into what it has turned into today.
I've sunk A LOT of money into it, not sure of the total... but aside from the $9000 or so I paid it has to be somewhere around an extra $22,000 Canadian Dollars in tires, brakes, suspension, engine, trans, etc... total investment then is over $30,000 Canadian for a used car LOL and that does not even include the money I've sunk on acquiring tool, shop/garage supplies, tool cabinet etc etc...
... This is NOT a cheap hobby if you want to make these cars faster.
$30,000 ???!!! I admit it's not a traditionally fast looking American muscle/street car(vette, camaro, stang, etc), but, the car is very fast for a W body and besides, in another 10 years or so when very few Grand Prix's will be left on the road it should look pretty cool.
I work for Dodge and drive the stock SRT products at least 1 or 2 times per year in the summer(in Canada), and this car generally shames them... however, with mods I have no doubt SRT products can easily surpass this GXP, but... NOT for $30,000. Not sure if I will ever own one or not as I am completely satisfied with the current state of my car. I feel like I will keep it as long as I can.
To me, the 2008 model is the best to own as it is the very LAST year(perhaps) we will ever see from the "Grand Prix" nametag possibly forever.

At the same time, I wish I had, like a, 92 or 93 Pearl White 300ZX... at 42 years old for me, THAT was the car that first "popped my cherry" and made me realize I could be happy with less than a Ferrari. I love that car dunno why...

The 1995 300ZX is usually considered the best of the 90-96 models simply because they had made all of the refinements by 1995, and it still retains the OBDI electronics. The 1996 is virtually identical to the 1995 outside of having OBDII electronics which weren't supported well at all from the aftermarket.
That being said, I'd say the major gotchas on the GP GXP are the transmission, wheel bearings, and electrical gremlins more than anything. They all seem to burn oil with the DOD/AFM system, but it's usually not catastrophic. Mileage is about on par with any other 300HP full-size vehicle, high teens city driving, mid/upper-20's for highway.

Like many of the other members here, I had the DOD turned off. I have had no problems with oil consumption and no burning oil. I did have some lifter tick at one point, but ever since I switched to Amsoil synthetic that problem has not come back. I have 220,000 miles now.
