Well, I Did it!! Just bought an 06 Impala SS, picked up a fleet vehicle with 9000 miles on it for $22,000. I can't wait to pick it up. One thing I didn't research though, how are these cars in the SNOW?? I'm sure they aren't great, but please tell me they are not complete disasters either. When I say disaster, I'm talking Camaro, Mustang material, just by the fact these are front wheel drive I'd imagine it's doable.

Awesome deal... I haven't heard any impala owners mention snow driving. I know most with the GXP say driving in the snow is effortless since it has traction control and front wheel drive. Im sure the Impala would handle about the same. Wouldn't know myself since in Mississippi it snows... hmmm... never. lol

Well, i've had my SS since late September, and i gotta say the SS did pretty well in the little snow we got. Had it been a typical Buffalo winter, i may have considered throwing snow tires on there, but at $300/ea i decided against it. All in all i was happy with how she handled.
The other thing i considered was downsizing the wheels to 9c1 (HD police-grade) 16" steelies with the police center cap. My friend has a set of Pirelli snow tires that would fit this setup perfectly.

Snow driving is almost completely dependent on the tires. My Camaros would have been better in the snow than my STi would be with the stock tires.
My Camaro was perfectly fine with a set of Blizzaks. I would *highly* recommend a set of those. Never once had a problem stopping or turning with those on.

Yeah, that was the big stink about the GXP: the tires are "3 season" tires and noone thought they'd work in the winter with snow. Of course, this wasn't the case.
I imagine we'll be seeing these types of posts again this comming winter.
[edit] +1 on snow tires if you're concerned about it. My Fiero GT had tires that sucked in the rain but when I put some yoko guardex on there for the winter- it was amazing. I would pass Jeeps comming home late at night during a snow storm.
