Default how much oil?

ok, i just got a GXP and sold my Formula, it's got 6k miles, and i changed the oil just after getting it from the dealer to get some mobile 1 in it

it took 7 qts of mobile 1 to get into the hashed section of the dipstick, is this normal? i know there are differences, but i never needed to put more than 6 qts into the ls1

anyone else need to use this much oil?

Sorry to hear about your F-body!

I think the "extra" oil goes to support that DoD crap ... read about it in another area.

If you have 7 quarts in it drain it out and make sure you only have 6, you can really mess some **** up this way. Make sure you are on a level surface and give the oil time to drain back into the pan after you fill it. As long as the car runs in the hash marks its ok. If you put 6 quarts in it and it wont show full take the car to the dealer and see if it has the wrong dipstick, the one for the 3800 cars is probaly a different length.

I agree, but you might, first, just let it sit on level ground after sitting for at least 1/2 hour, and check the oil... Especially if the oil doesn't get completely warmed up, it can take quite awhile for it to drain back down into the pan and give you a good reading on the stick. I'd hate to throw out $40 in oil just because I lost count when putting the oil in... If it's on level ground, and still reads right, like he said, go see if the dipstick is the right one...

The main thing is, when the car is running, check and see if there are a bunch of air bubbles on the dipstick, in the oil... This means the crank is sloshing in the oil (because there's too much in there), and bubbles in the oil can break down the hydro-dynamic bearings all over your engine, and cause metal on metal... Not good.

damn straight, measured how far up the dipstick, and calculated the area of the oil pan at that depth, multiplied to get volume in cubic inches then converted to quarts

If you put 7 quarts in an engine that takes 6 quarts you are 1 quart over not 1/8th no matter what the dipstick says, you would be better off under than over.

I know the book says 6 quarts, the last time I got changed the technician told me it was actually closer to 6-1/2.

I'd have to agree. I've done the last two changes and each time 6qts got me just into the crosshatched area on the dipstick...and yes i did look at both sides.
