Well since they probably don't have one in stock, just go in there, show a writer or tech that it's broken and they will probably write a repair order on the car and order you the part. Ask them if when the part arrives if you can just bring in the broken part and exchange it with the new one, they will need the old part back because GM can ask for it and the dealer has to send it to GM, or not get reimbursed for the warr repair. It shouldn't be that painful for you. As a matter of fact this is exactly what I am going to do.

not arguing that something that breaks under normal use should not be covered , I was talking about making up a story to tell the dealer to ensure it was covered. For all we know, the original owner hit it with a baseball bat because they were ticked at the car (it was traded in after all...) or maybe it was actually used as a hat and rammed through a wall during a drunken rampage. Should it be covered by GM then?

Just a pet peeve of mine, seems the World is becoming a place where lying and cheating is commonplace to make it someone else's problem instead of taking responsiblity for our own actions. Obviously it is not about a piddly broken plastic part, just the idea that it is ok to say anything to facilitate a free repair is what bugged me. Sadly, I guess I am in the minority here. Something to think about before I get off my soapbox. If you find someone who feels the need to rationalize what they are doing to other people(not that anyone has done that here), they know it is ethically wrong.

Again, not suggesting that anyone here would actually do it, nor that I would be above such a thing, just bugs me, but I will let it die here.

end of rant, enjoy the rest of this very fine Spring day!

I know where you're coming from and I would be the last person to complain to GM if I broke my diff drag racing... but the air cleaner lid is something that should be designed to allow intermittant use over the life of the car without breaking. Has anyone else noticed what a PIA it is to get to the air filter? True, some dumb dick at Jiffy Lube could have muscled the lid off and cracked the tab before I got the car but perhaps it should be a bit more idiot proof... hence GM is partially responsible because of the design, materials used, possible flaw, etc.

Well just go to the dealer, show them the broken air box, have them order one because the probably wont have one in stock. Ask if when the part arrives if you can bring in the old/broken part and exhchange it. The dealership will need the old part because if GM asks for it back (which they can do) the dealership will have to provide the part or will not get reimbursed for the warr repair. This is basically what I am going to do.
