Default descreened MAF

In my quest for more power, I've seen that some people have removed the screen from their MAF. My question is "is this going to give me any kind of benifit". Anyone have any experiance with this? Pro's and Con's to doing this?

Oh yeah, my hogan 3" downpipe with high flow cat, hp tuner, and LC-1 wideband got ordered today!!! Gotta love Christmas in July!!!

nope, won't give you any benefit on our cars, and may actually cause problems, since the screen is used to straighten out the airflow over the MAF sensors in the housing to get accurate readings...

also, if something manages to get past the filter, it'll get sucked into the engine...

better off all around to just leave it on...

Will make it run lean or make the trims go batshit. Unless you are sharp with the HPT skills to get the maf dialed in at all points (Hz freq ranges) it may run like ***.

I dont have a screen in mine, but i tuned for it.

Everything I've heard from people in the know is that the stock unmolested MAF is best.

Sounds like I'm gonna be leaving it in.

BADLS1SS - If you don't mind, I'm probably gonna need some help to get started with my hp tuner. I don't know anything about what to do, just figured I'd read up and ask for advice. Got tired of waiting for diablo.

ANyone with the K&N leave it in? There is no way to hold it in place without glue or tape...it just falls out. I want to put mine back in but wanted to see if someone else succeeded with theirs first.

I don't remember having to take it out.

When I was all done installing the K&N, I took all the leftover (stock) pieces and put them in the stock airbox and clamped it up. I just now opened up the airbox, and I didn't see any "screen" piece. I can only assume I didn't have to take mine off. If I remember correctly, I didn't have to worry about using anything to hold it in place. It never became separated.

Hey corny... the screen is inside the MAF housing - on the end that connects to the K&N filter... you'd know if you took it off, cuz you would have had to pry it out of there... but it should be left in there anyway, so you're fine...

So Buff, did you mean to remove yours, or did it just come out?

If you pushed just hard enough to break the adhesive when you removed it without bending it the screen should be able to be put back in and sit tight. You could try putting a light coat of sealer (almost see through like paper thin) on the edge and let it dry then try pushing it in to make it fit tighter again.

To the OP: Don't do it. Leave the MAF alone. All the f-bod guys will tell you not to touch it. Just think of how much of a waste a "Grantelli" MAF is....

Yeah, i may have pryed it out...can't remember, though. It kept it's shape. At first i was told it was a hinderance when it does, in fact, have a purpose beyond protecting the sensor, and more importantly the engine, from large(r) debris. I'll slap a little RTV or super glue on it and get it back in there this weekend when i clean the Filter and MAF

I wonder if this is why your trims were so far off? Be interesting to see how they are after you put it back. I had also read it smooths out the air, but so does the cone filter, so who knows.

If we're not doing anything tonight, i may clean that biatch and get the screen back in there and do some logging before i go camping next Friday.

Oh, and i was getting ****-poor mileage w/o the K&N too, so i doubt the screen is going to miraculously fix my leadfootitus or find me a better job with a decent highway commute.
