Default Shifter?

I know we all have A4's and aren't in contact with the shifter all the time, but does the stock meat cleaver of a brute in the MC/Imp bug you? I mean the thing is huge....Is there anyway we could swap it out? I was thinking of a Hurst pistol grip or something along these lines:

yeah, been wondering about this too... I'd like to get something different in there...

from what I've seen/read, any auto shift handle should work, as long as it has that button on it... but I'm not sure...

anyone have any more info about doing this?

When I had my GTP, I was pondering getting a shifter from a Bonneville GXP, which still looked factory, but had some brushed aluminum looking details on it.

Yeah its mainly personal preference, and I didn't have a 00-05 car...so I wouldn't appreciate the difference. It's just the fact that the stock one is a honker...and a sportier, slimmer shifter would be more fitting for the performance image....

I agree with you Nacho...but no, i don't have a clue. I don't mind it too much, in fact it's comfortable to rest my hand on. My hand is always in contact with it though...so much that my wife thinks i think it's a manual trans. LOL

I like the elegance of the stock one...I keep my car looking aggressive from the outside....cushy and comfortable on the inside. I'd like to see how it looks if and when you do it though.

The major malfunction is the fact that there is a button to take the trans in and out of gear. I have been looking at various shifters that have buttons, and most are wired for n20, line-locks, or lights....

The f-body guys can install ones without buttons even though their stockers have buttons. They tell me to shift all you do is push in (down) slightly. What I am still trying to find out if we need that button to change gears on a 4t65-hd tranny....I need someone like Compg to chime in here before I hack it up .

I have seen this a couple times on a few diffrent makes and models. Im not sure how the shifter mechanism works on our cars in particular but on some cars that i have seen this type of set up when you take off the shifter head it will expose the shifter housing and a long white plastic peice which is the part the button engages normaly. Therefore what people are doing is putting an aftermarket shift **** overthis white part and not realy securing it in any way there is enough of the white plastic to hold the shifter **** on ( sometimes the **** goes over the thin shifter housing ) and when you press down on it then **** will contact the white plastic therefore you engage it as you would the button. Kinda cool concept and looks cool....... However you can just pull the **** off which is ... well ... lame.. I have seen some work done with clips, clue , and tape to try to get the **** to stay some effective some not but its something you can try if your realy interested in doin this.

....Sorry for the book

No problem...I want to learn about this.

Is what you are saying is the new shifter just sits on the shaft loosely and when pushed down it engages the plastic? So what do the extra washers/parts do that they give you for fit (see the first picture) do?

Still TTT, need some more ideas/consensus...

You could always just yank the screw in the OEM shifter and look at it yourself...

The skrew is to hold down the shifter **** if you were to install it the "right way" on a shifter that has no button or skrew it into place holding the button down which would remove your lockout (!!! i would NOT suggest doing this !!!! ) when it comes down to it shifters like the one in the picture are not made for our type of cars there might be some out there that come with a button or sometype of spring mechanism i have not done that much research but i havent seen anything like that short of somethin like a B&M type shifter
