Default Headers

for all of those who want a set of headers, I am going to try and fab some up (as stated in previous posts). My main question is, is there any way to get a set of exhaust manifolds donated for me to mock up off of?? My wifey absolutely will not let me take the manifolds off of my car, end of discussion there. Does anyone have a solution so we can get this ball rolling???

We use stock manifolds for the turbo kit Only thing we replace is the crossover between the 2.

You can get the header gaskets to get the mold made. I spoke to a guy who is going to work on this over the winter for me. He said he would do 1/7/8 to 1/3/4 and a 2.5 inch pipe going over the tranny. He said the biggest issue is going to be getting the header in the back to flow the same as the front.

That's what I was thinking also. On Club GP hit up Ed, he might let you use them then send them back without paying, or you might have to buy some. Either way if you get some after you use them could you check on maybe porting the stock manifolds. Maybe as a halfway point for people that want the added performance but can't afford the extra $.

For the 5.3L engine I wouldn't consider anything larger than a stepped 1-5/8" to 1-3/4" header!

Wow, thanks for the quick response. I had a guy send me a PM willing to give me a set of manifold lenders off of his DD. I checked out the front set and they look like I should have no prob fabbing them up. The back, I dunno cause they look like a bitch to get to. I would have to make sure all of my clearances are super tight on them, at least that is what it looks like. As far as design inputs, all inputs are welcome and all are appreciated. I would have to order the tube from our supplier and we have the benders and all at work to get the right angles. I just need a def answer on what size pipe they should be made out of. Where the actual headers would mount to the block I would have to make out of stainless plate and then just weld the tubes to that plate (no biggie). The bungs where the O2 sensors go, I would have no prob putting them in either, just a suggestion as to where it should be placed for optimal performance would be nice. Also, what grade of stainless would you guys suggest?? I think 316 would be more than adequate but I see that Hogan is using like 409 on his DPs. Keep in mind, the lower the number the more inexpensive the material, hence the lower the cost. Stainless is some tough stuff and does very well with the heat (even lower grades).

As far as the rear header flowing the same as the front one, I would basically use the GM design for everything but just use freer(is that a word) flowing tubes with less restrictive bends and curves. Now, there are calculations you can do to determine volume and all for both front and back but I have to see the stock manifolds to be able to get a proper numbers to use in order to get a proper flow ratio ( if there even is a diff between front and back). Does that make sense or am I just babbling out of the excitement of possibly making custom headers for my own car?? HEHEHE

Do the math first.

Go with 409 Stainless Steel.

I am finallly getting back to the fab shop tomorrow so I can start gathering some materials for the headers. "For the 5.3L engine I wouldn't consider anything larger than a stepped 1-5/8" to 1-3/4" header!" What do you mean by stepped???

From smaller diameter to larger diameter; stepping up in size.

Starting at the flange with 1-5/8" diameter tubing for 12" inlength and then 1-3/4" for the balance of the length.

12 inches in length??? Is that right, if so, I guess I will try and get the materials rounded up next week, it usually takes our supplier a few days to get the pipe to us. What wall thickness would yous recommend on here for the headers? I think I will get the headers ceramic powder coated for the dispersing of more heat. I was thinking sch 10 (.120 or so) would be fine. Also, should I locate the bung for the O2 sensor closer or further away to the block, anything like that would help.

14 guage

Locate the O2's in the end of the collectors. I would make these a 3" collector and also use a merge collector for increased velocity!
