Are you running an intake? Tuned? If so, chances are likely you're running lean, as you suggest, and the engine is enrichening the fuel deliver to compensate. I had the same problem when I installed the Magnaflow system. Those monster tips with the lip on the end always collected a lot of soot, but then I dialed in the tune and it was better.
Now, I'm no longer tuned, but still have the K&N. The new TBSS tips I installed don't seem to collect as much as the others did.

He sold it. Can't recall if it was to someone here or over at NAIOA.com. I wanna say it was someone here. On a side note, semi-related to the original topic, is there anything in particular that's good to use to get that crap off and get the tips all shiny again?

Yeah, Bill, i sold it to EmersonHart, iirc. Had no use for it over the winter and had better things to do with a couple hundred bucks at the time. With no TCM in sight, I figured I would eventually snag HPtuners...and may still do so.
I always used windex on the tips and then shined them up with metal polish. I'm using EagleOne Wadding polish on the tips atm...well, not ATM, considering I haven't really WASHED her myself in months.

All cars come running rich from the manufacture, this helps lower emission standards doesn't it? I always use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on my rims and tips and it works great. I might have cancer when I'm 45 because of it, but hell I'm a smoker so that will probably happen any way.
