Weird rattle when 8>4 cyl. switch...maybe tranny?
#41
Hey Chris,
I had called Chevy Customer service while back. And what the rep said to me at the time was anything regarding the drive train the dealer will have to provide a loaner if it takes more than a day. Some dealers don't have loaners so they use Enterprise and such and you get a rental. But I had asked what about Warranty paint repair and he said it is the dealers decision to provide one or not. Now how knowledgeable this rep was is a different story

Sounds to me like its pinging. Try running Premuim fuel for a little while and listen to see if the rattle goes away. When I first bought my car I ran 92. I switched to 87 after October and noticed worse fuel milage (colder weather) and a lazy shifting tranny. My engine would rattle all of the time especially in 4cyl mode. I thought something was wrong with it untial I switched back to 92. I don't care what the owners manual says to run or what others say to run. 87 in my car gives me worse milage and a lot of rattling. I don't think the computer is able to lower the timming enough to stop it at low speeds

I always run premium. Tried all different types (from Mobil 93 to Sunoco 94 to corner store 93, etc.) and it never helped.
On a side note, I had them drop the pan to do tranny service and they noticed nothing special in the fluids.
Then my wife got into an accident, and now I have holes in two doors, fenders f**ked, as is rear quarterpanel, bumper, and two wheels Luckily, it's not my (her) fault so nothing out of pocket. Pics up in a bit.

I dropped my car off at the dealer Tuesday and they were able to duplicate the rattling with the car on the rack. They said it was pretty loud. GM had them check a few things and they determined it needs new lifters. I asked the mechanic if there has been a lot of problems with the DOD and he said a few trucks came in with lifter problems, and one had some bent rods as a result, but mine was the first car to have lifter problems (and the rods are OK). They had to order the lifters, so hopefully I'll get it back Friday.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing the guys just didn't spend the time looking into the issue.
What are the consequences of ignoring this problem, if I indeed need new lifters? IMO, the car runs like **** now (esp. compared to the Maxima i'm driving atm), and I'm wondering if new lifters would breathe some life back into the car...

When I had my car dyno tuned last week it had a whole bunch of KR going on and this is with 92 octane. I guess it had way to much timing stock. I was also running pretty lean at WOT. Vince brought my engine down to 12.2:1 and removed some of the timing. The extra fuel helped to cool the engine and we got an extra 15hp. My mileage is improving as well. We need like 95 octane. I'm going to install a 180 T-stat and use a 1 step colder plug. I'm pretty sure the rattle that all of you are hearing is the engine pinging.

Hey David... stock, our LS4's already have a 187* t-stat in 'em.... so don't know if goin to a 180 will do much for ya...
fwiw, I tweaked my fan settings to come on earlier, and at a higher % of power, and yesterday, while 84* outside, my ECT only went as high as 195*...
stock, the fans don't come on that early, and even when they do, at the highest temps they're only setup to run at 50% power... lame...
I've attached a pic of the stock fan settings:

Engine ping I've only heard before when accelerating, never when coasting. This rattling I only hear when slowing down in 4cly mode at about 20-10mph or slower, never when accelerating. When it goes back into 8cyl mode it stops instantly. If I leave it in 3rd so it doesn't go into 4cyl mode it never happens either. I just got my car back from the dealer who put in new lifters. It's been pretty windy today so I get a lot of wind noise with the windows down, but almost sounds like it's still doing it.

Same here...cannot get it to do it when accelerating. Only when slowing and in 4cyl mode. Stops immediately in 8. PG...let us know what's what when you get to drive it more.

Like I've said I think it's normal. Lengthy oil change intervals only aggravate it.
BTW I was running around alot tofday and I barely heard mine. I almost had to not think about driving the car to hear it. I really suggest guys flush out all that old oil.

Well driving around today I could barely hear the noise. So it isn't 100% fixed, but its way better than it was. I can live with it now. I can't believe this noise is normal, mine was REALLY loud. The mechanic even commented how loud it was when they put it on the rack to duplicate it in the shop.
