Default Steering klunking

Can anybody give me a heads up on why I feel a klunk (as if someone is tapping the steering shaft with a small hammer) in my steering wheel. My steering is tight, just have this klunk. Could this be the steering shaft grease issue that has a Tech Bull. If so, has anyone addressed this enough to give me some heads up before I start looking? It klunks when braking and going over bumps. Like I said the steering does not have any play in it. Thanks in advance.

BTW, its a 06 impala ss

Yep sounds like the ISS, there's a write up on it somewhere.

Definetly sounds like the ISS, I had mine replaced not too long ago for the same issue you are experiencing.

I'm actually about to have this looked at again. Its one problem after another with this car. Its barely giving me enough time to deal with one problem before i move on to the next one. Now my steering is making a "clicking noise" instead of the clunk and everysence they took my last ISS out and replaced it i've been leaking some sort of fluid very very slowly just enough to cover my oil pan but not drip on the ground. Only been noticing it during my last 2 oil changes. Also my stereo makes a huge amount of static when i "first turn it on" while a mp3 player is playing and its in auxiliary mode.

Its probably the ISS. Common GM problem. Dates back to late 90's early 2000 cavaliers, imps, montes. They still ain't fixed it. Usually your dealer will lube it with synthetic grease the first time and if it comes back the second time they will replace it. It happened 2 times on mu 01 monte ss i used to have.

have them check the whole front end though... cuz I had the same thing, but replacing the ISS did not fix the problem...

so then they replaced the steering rack... that didn't fix the problem....

then they discovered it was the wheel bearings... so they replaced both front sets of wheel bearings, and everthing was good as new...

How bout you guys helping a little more. What would be the procedure if its my ISS? I'm gonna try that first I guess. Is it easy to remove and grease? I have to do it my self, I am not under the warranty anylonger, it crapped out at 36k. I bought it too early to fall under the new 100k warranty? Sux I know.

Did you try searching for the writeup for the ISS repair? Not sure if it's here or at NAIOA...and there's another good one from ClubGP, too. I'll see what I can find.

Sint, there is a bullitin on your MP3 issue. If it's not downloaded correctly, or on an Apple/Mac design, it will have these issues. I'll see if I can find bullitin.
