Default Crank Keyed, Hub Not?

So were assembleing a buddy's 383. Its all buttoned up basically, were doing the entire motor out of the car and putting it in from the bottom. We go to put the balancer on and find that the crank is keyed but the balancer is not. Is it supposed to be like that? Can I get one that is keyed? Need some info on this subject. Its a scat crank. I wasnt there for disassembly of the motor. Seems kinda heavy to turn it not keyed...

The stock hub is not keyed. You can either have a machine shop put a keyway in it, or you can buy one of the many aftermarket hub/dampers that have a keyway, such as the ATI's.

If the OE hub had been in place for some time, there's a possibility that it has a "hot oil tatoo" on its inner bore. If so, you can use that as a locator mark, as it shows where the keyway is located.

From my understanding, the stock hub is simply a hub, and not a balancer. What that means is, it doesn't matter what what you put it on, since it's only purpose is to provide a pulley location. I think it also doubles as a bit of a harmonic dampener, but not a harmonic balancer though.

Hey I have an aftermarket keyed steel dampener that I have not used b/c it was for my 383 build I never did. If you want it let me know via PM. It's a single unit deal, dampener and hub as one.

I want to say that a balancer won't work on our internally balanced motors. To me, it would be like adding more weight to a perfectly balanced wheel. But I can't say for sure, I'd wait for someone else to chime in. I know you can take one to your engine builder when the motor is being built, so he can balance the whole rotating assembly with it.

Frequent removal and installation of the same balancer on the same hub may possibly cause the slightest bit of wear that could possibly make the fitment not as tight as intended and the balancer could possibly slip. Although, (IMO) extremely unlikely with the the minimal amount of load the belt puts on the balancer.

Here, read the description to a keyed hub that is being sold on thunderracing.
