Default ABS Inop

So my ABS INOP light just randomly showed up on my car. What does that mean is wrong with it? Can I take it to auto zone to get it scanned?

A sensor for the ABS is probably bad, i think they can scan to let you know which one. Cannot remember.

It will probably randomly go away too. Sometimes I wonder if the low coolant sensor and the ABS system are hypochondriacs.

Yeah I would get it checked out, heard the ABS can be dangerous if not operating properly.

Mine came on and it ended up being a bad plug wire that was arching across to one of the ABS sensor wires. Fluke thing, but its an idea

Not to hijack thread, but mine has been on for a couple years. The code says something about "rear ground fault"? Had a local shop look at it, they told me it was a bad harness that coonects from the rear to the body. Replaced it the light stays on still. I put all led lights in the car yrs ago, I wonder if thats causing it? Brakes still work flawless, so I have not been too worried about it.

As long as your brakes are working fine I wouldn't sweat it. In my experience it's quite common on these cars for the light to come on randomly. Check the sensors to see if everything's in good shape; but like someone mentioned, replacing the parts doesn't guarantee the light will stay out.

My latest hypothesis is that when the diff. let go in my 10bolt, the rear abs sensor did the same. although it looked ok when I replaced the diff?

There is a good chance that one of the connectors is corroded.
Unplug each connector, one for each front wheel and one or two for the rear and then there is a connector on the body above the axle for the rear sensor(s).
Then you can look at them and see if they need to be cleaned with a bit of contact cleaner. Make sure they seat well when you plug them back in.

Yes ABS issues can be scary, my light would come on and for about 1 second the brakes would 'let go', then catch again. Just enough to stop your heart.

Mine doesn't come on until I've been driving about 5 - 10 minutes. Kind of weird. The brakes still seem to work just fine when the light is on. So I dunno..?

The LEDs could be it. When people have swapped to the LS1 style SS spoiler with LED 3rd brake light, the LEDs don't draw enough current and set the ABS light off. A simple resistor inline fixes the issue. I beleive the 3rd brake light is wired up seperately than the others after the turn signal assembly switch in the steering column (i had to replace it years ago), so I'm not sure if the side brake lights will produce the same problem.

I'll try to skim the service manual tomorrow and see if I can come up with any information.

Are you running aftermarket rims and tires? Are they larger than 16in? If so, get used to it. It'll occur randomly.
