Default Friendly Stock Bottom End Cams

ok! ive been in a really good mood lately with christmas and whatnot and have decided to do a cam sometime in the later winter/early spring depending on when i have time. i know what parts i need for the swap. even tho the LS7 lifter part # would be a big help. but i wanna know what cams would be a good choice for a good 'bump' from stock and which cams all of you guys are having good luck with. my car is an M6 with stock gears and 150k miles.

GM PART # 12499225 (LS7 lifters) The CC503 is always a nice choice or maybe a Lloyd custom grind

I guess it all really depends on your goals for the car? obviously you could go with a custom cam to get exactly what you want. i think a really popular choice is the cc503. Just figure out your goals for yourself. with that many miles, u may want to stay a little on the smaller-mild side. so maybe that Cadillac cam. ive heard it is doing pretty decent. depending on the health of the engine, you might consider waiting it out. Get a new bottom end, and get whatever H/C you want. just an idea, im sure some with a lot more experience is going to jump in here. There is also a Sticky on Cam choices. Great stuff. Good Luck.

well im really hungry for power in the worst way. i want to do a cam now and then save up for a bottom end next winter. im thinking along the lines of a 355 build Yum! but thatll all go depending on my budget. and then when i do that id get a custom grind cam and then heads yada yada. i also dont want to shell out tons of cash for just a cam swap. plus id want a mail order tune and the 503 is a popular cam so im sure tuners are good with it. or at least i can hope

also i can just replace the timing chain if the sprockets are ok, right ? does anyone have that part number ? thanks!

I'd go with eiter an AI or LE cam they both have awesome feedback and either can do a custom if you want. I would def replace the chain, you can either get a GM replacement or go with a standard SBC double roller and an EWP, my 38k miles chain was preety dang loose when i replaced it last night with a cloyes double roller. I will have about 1500 in all my parts then 500 for a Speed Inc. dyno tune. To do it right it's not cheap unfortunetely...

you guys are great! thanks for all the feedback.

2XR95Z28 i would def go with an LE custom cam but i dont want to put my bottom, trans, or rear in danger quite yet. when i save up money ill do a rear. ive been keeping an eye on that 8.6" thats being set up in the gears section.

Check the price of the 503 cause like I always say, Lloyd can custom grind you the same cam and maybe tweak it a bit to get a few extra ponies for $300 shipped

how much did you pay for the cloyes and where did you get it? also do the lt4 timing chains fit? and how are they in comparison

Well I think Cloyes double rollers are about 100 bucks and LT4 Extreme Duty is about $250 bucks. I have an LT4 Extreme Duty to go in mine. The biggest advantage to the LT4 ED is that you can still use the stock water pump and you do not have to go electric.

I would say with the cc503 the powerban is a little high for the stock bottom end which is what turned me off of that cam. and the AI 226/234 i went with makes power just to 6200 and that is all the higher i wanna wrap out my stock bottom end.

I got a deal on the Cloyes cause i got the whole cam kit from AI and they gave me a discount cause i bought close to 1300 bucks worth of parts.

You will be fine with replacing the stock timing chain...NO need to spend a couple hundred bucks on a double roller

Crane227 is always a nice one too. There have been 110-114mph passes with it on stock to mildly ported heads and not so perfect bolt ons.
