I pulled mine out the bottom in just a few hours without doing any research, it was actually a blast. I'm gunna do it again when I get the money to do a cam. Should only take me an hour or two this time.

Default engine removal

Im about to do mine thie weekend.

Question:

1. Is there a way to remove the transmission and engine together WITH OUT draining the oil from tranny? Or is draining it a must

2. Does the rear wheels NEED to be sitting on some rims or can it be done with the rear wheels on the ground?

u dont have to drain the trans oil while droping out the bottom, but some oil might spill out of the rear trans snout once the drive shaft is disconnected.

it is safer to have the rears sitting on a set of wheels, but u can still do it with them on the ground

Removed one from the top in a 97z. Had to twist the engine sideways to get it out but it wasnt an issue. Got is out in one day and only took 12 beers..... so about 4 hrs...

No and No. I did it the exact same way Johnny LT1 did it and without it sitting on some wheels. A compressor and impact is highly recommended. Good investment as well, as long as you get the right one.

Let me rephrase that. No, you do not need to seperate the tranny and engine, in fact it is easier removing them together. Simply disconnect the tranny lines from the cooler. You do not need to drain it.

Use a good transmission tailshaft plug and plug the trans cooler lines in the front. Not a drop lost.

I took mine out the top but we are putting it back in through the bottom. I would say the top method had a difficulty of about 5 out of 10. I havent done the bottom method yet, but suspect it will be easier.
