Just get an alt from AutoZone. They are rebuilt stockers, and it comes with a warranty. You give them the old one for the core fee. I think the last time I bought one, it was $188.

Well I figured at 153k on the oem alt, when it started squeeking that it was time to just replace the whole thing. Plus having a warranty is nice.

while i dont know what number the alternator is, i bought brushes and a new regulator from oreillys a few years ago. not sure if they would be able to get bearings or not. the brushes shouldnt be a problem but the regulator was a cheaply made foreign piece and ended up going out after about a year. it would charge at 18 volts and all the air bag light started flashing. thought i was gonna get sucker punched. i agree with you rebuilding though, especially if you could get away with just brushes. $6 and about a hour is worth it to me.

Why is everyone so affraid to rebuild an alternator? It's easier than installing headers let alone cams, cylinder heads, etc. Why pay $190 for something you can do yourself for a quarter of the price or less?

rebuilding an alt is easy but you need a press to properly replace those bearings or you can destroy the case.

this place has about everything you need.

http://www.alternatorparts.com/

you'll need that front bearing retaining clip also.

if your alternator has a retaining clip up front then you can reuse it, but I haven't found a stock alternator that has the front retaining clip. If you don't use the retaining clip up front the bearing will move in and out of the case.

seems to be the case, just entered the info into our parts program at work and they came back as that. Guess the engineers liked the slightly smaller case on the 102. Hell on my 03 duramax the 145amp is an upgrade the 105 is the standard option.
