UMI is great for suspension and Lloyd Elliott and AI can get you squared away with a nice heads/cam set up. Look into all the basic bolt-ons (Headers, Cold air, throttle body, free mods) before you look into a heads/cam swap.

no matter what you do to get 500 horse your going to need to invest in a rear end. I have a 97 z with a pro charger, yes its a super charger, (centrifugal) and if you keep it mild (5-6psi) around there you should be fine for a long time. It would greatly benefit to put a cam, valve springs, roller rockers, good pushrods, some headers.

Only problem going w/ a pro charger is how much they cost. Plus he would need a few extra supporting mods to run along w/ the charger. It would end up being bank for all that plus he needs to dial in some suspension stuff as well. A good heads and cam combo with all the supporting mods should get him in the mid to high 400's especially being it's a m6. You don't ness need a new rear end although it wouldn't. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Use what ya got until it it breaks.

Here's a great link of "LT1 How to's" http://www.shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech1.html and De-screening the Mass Air Flow is simply taking out the screen inside the MAF. It snaps out from a groove that's engraved inside the MAF. Here are some images of the following items I was telling you about "free mods" more or less.
1st pic is the 1LE intake boot, Air Foil, Throttle body Bypass kit, 160 thermostat

Leave the MAF screened. Heads, Cam, Intake, full bolt ons and a 75shot + Tuned. Theres your 500hp. Cost? Oh, in the area of $1650 for LE2 package, $200 intake work, $550~ full exhaust, $250~ 1.6 RRs, NOS $500-$1000 (estimate), $150 injectors, $250 Tune. Then of course odds n ends cost and shipping That'll keep you from having to built a lower end up, like you'd need for supercharging for 500hp :\
