Default Help!

Ok iv got a couple questions. First, how are you supposed to get the water pump shaft seal on without destroying it?! This is the seal in the timing cover. It has to be able to go on without flipping the wrong way, but gm and felpro both dont give you an installation sleeve. My other question is, how much slack should a new timing set have? I got a brand new factory replacement lunati timing set from summit. Evrything is new, but when installed it has a bunch of slack, with really pisses me off, it cost 100 bucks for the timing set. And yes its both gears and the chain, so it should be zero slack shouldent it?

It took me 3 trys to get that seal on. I ended up making an installation sleeve out of a 2-liter bottle. It was just like the little tube that comes with valve seals to keep you from ripping the seals. Cut a small piece out of the bottle and make a circle so the seal will slide over it. Insert it onto the shaft and slide the seal over it, hammer it on, then pull the 2-liter bottle piece out with needle nose pliers. I oiled up the bottle pice really well so it wouldnt tear and go on easier. It worked fine for me but I think there are better ways to do it. My new timing chain had only a little slack.

And for the record, the people at Fel-Pro are idiots for not sending some kind of installation tool for that water pump seal.

I don't know the spec, but something like a 1/4 inch of slack measured from a straight edge laid across the gears is acceptable.

There is a write up on impala ss forum about using a sharpie. I took the guts out of a highlighter and oiled it up good, slid the seal on the highlighter, and then stuck the end of the highlighter over the shaft and slid the seal off onto the shaft. Hope this helps.

That's pretty cool. I remember having a fun time without a special tool.

I used a deep socket of the correct diameter. You can also use the coupler.
