Default Little fun with the G-Tech

Well, my brother and I were bored so we decided to take the car out and G-Tech it and compare the numbers to when I tested it stock about 1 year ago.

My best pass in the 1/4 mile on a track stock was 14.32 @ 97 mph.

My average of the two G-tech runs that I did last year (on the street, one pass in each direction) are as follows:

0-60: 5.74
60': 2.55
1/8: 9.383
MPH: 81.915
1/4: 14.211
MPH: 102.135

Obviously the mph is high as it always is on a G-Tech, but the ET wasn't too far off from what I really ran.

Since then I've installed 3.42 gears, LS1 driveshaft, 1LE elbow, K&N CAI, airfoil, and Magnaflow catback.

Tonight we went out to a different road, but one that's seemingly flat, straight, and level. Due to decent differences in the runs one way as opposed to the other, I think there might be a slight incline/decline depending on the direction. Also, my brother was riding shotgun tonight, and I was alone last time, so the car was about 160lbs heavier tonight. The time of year was almost the same, so I'm guessing that the weather isn't really a factor.

Average of my two passes:

0-60: 5.509
60': 2.252
1/8: 9.119
MPH: 80.57
1/4: 14.055
MPH: 100.225

This equals:

faster 0-60: .231 seconds
faster 60': .298 seconds
faster 1/8: .265 second
slower mph: 1.345 mph
faster 1/4: .156 seconds
slower mph: 1.91 mph

There are always alot of variables with tests like this, but it still showed solid gains. The one thing I'm not liking is the trend for the car to fall off as the run progressed. I improved almost 3 tenths in the 60', but one 2.5 tenths in the 1/8 and only 1.5 tenths in the 1/4? Also, the mph dropped off as the ET improvement did.

In the course of the next couple days I plan to go back out to the original road that I used the first time and test it again without a passenger and then compare the numbers. Then I want to swap on the Nittos and test it a final time, which should get some very good numbers since I'll be able to launch it harder.

I'll let you guys know how it does, and then how it does for real at the track

DISCLAIMER: I realize that the best way to test a car after new mods is to take it to the track, which will happen once the track opens. Also, I realize that using a G-Tech is a very inconsistent meathod of obtaining any performance numbers.

Well the main thing here is that it definately showed some gain. Guess you'll see for sure when you take it to the strip

g-tech is on the money as far as i see it, dead on for me......the mph will always be higher on the g-tech opposed to the track since the g-tech works off of inertia, not breaking a beam like at the track......i need to but another one myself...

good job, anymore plans for the car?

Didn't run the HP setting before and after I assume :\ I've always been curious how close those numbers are.

The hp and tq numbers are always pretty far off even when entering the weight, etc.

I never run the HP setting because it's hard with an auto car. They want you to start low in a gear and then punch it and wind out the gear like on a dyno. It never seems to work well for me with the auto. Maybe I'll give it another shot, we'll see. It will read low, probably in the area of 40-50 hp low (compared to whp on a dynojet) and different gears will probably give different numbers also.

Taking into account the passenger, I probably saw ET improvements of around 3 tenths of a second. Even if that's the only gain then I should be decently into the 13's once I toss on the drag radials. As stated, a 60' improvement of 3 tenths should show much more than 3 tenths at the big end, but we'll see what really happens at the track

96lt1m6, yeah G-Techs are alot of fun, but get a bad rap from too many people citing the numbers they get as the actual performance of their cars (forgetting to take into acount things like the road might be downhill, lol).

For immediate plans, I'm gonna toss on some Nitto Drag Radials and to a TB bypass. Then I'll be taking it up to the track to see if I can crank out some high 13's.

After that I'll be looking into some bolt-ons for more top end power (headers, 1.6 roller rockers, electric water pump, etc).

When I ran it stock at the track I did 2.14 60' with street tires, and 2.73 gears. Next time I go I'll be on Nittos with 3.42 gears, so I'm looking for 1.9x's.

Screamin, what's a G-TECH run? It's the quarter mile run, right? Why not just say that?

G-tech sounds a bit like a computer nerd or something... Anyway, it sounds like you had fun..

you said you dropped 3 tenths almost on your 60'..........for every .1 off you 60', its about .2-.250 at the 1/4.

maybe you shifted different or somthin, cuz its apparent you didnt run out the back door as well as last time.

besides that lil deal.....those gtech meters seem kinda cool. your times are definetly worse then if at a track due to traction.

trust true track times.....gtech is just for ballpark. wish I could buy one to see what my caould do though. the ultimate test would to use a gtech meter at the track, and compare the time on it to the time slip.

^Yeah, they are alot of fun, but you're right that you can't take the numbers to heart. That being said, I did use mine once at the track, but it was with a different car (1999 Grand Prix GT) and it was actually very close ET wise.

I'm going to try and replicate my original runs as well as I can (no passengers, same road, etc) and see how it does. The car is an auto, so it shifted the same as last time. In theory I could have a problem and the car could be down on power up top, but I think it has more to do with the imprecise nature of G-Tech testing on the street.

Also, I got my G-Tech from my friend who bought it for me in return for installing headers on his Nissan 350Z

Nice improvement for the mods. GTECH's are a lot of fun. I like toying around with mine. But, I haven't used it in a long time because there's just no good roads around here to use it on.

^Yeah, I hear that. We have a couple roads to use, but one is hard due to traffic (took us a few tried to get a clean road with no traffic in either direction. The other that I like to use is good, but I know like doing it in the daytime because at night there are alot of deer.
