A little more RWHP

You recommend a 383. A 383 with a set of heads/cam will spin higher than a stock shortblock. You move the power up in the powerband, increasing your available revs. Compensated with 4.10s to put the car into the usable revs.
Do you honestly think a 383 is going to keep your gas mileage the same? Even if you did rebuild a 383 for $2500, you'd probably spend about one-twentieth that cost in additional gas if you upgraded to 4.10s. A 383 is not cheap. Even $2500 is skimping it for a 383, not to mention all of the associated costs with the parts, including the valvetrain, heads (can't forget about those, can we?), etc.?
A lower gear (numerically higher) moves the available power your car makes into a more usable RPM. That's the point in changing gearing. Most will tell you 4.10s won't do jack to you gas mileage (Hey, you can pick any gear! That's the beauty of an M6!).
Once again, we bring up the "omg my gas mileage is going to suffer meow" topic. If you so worried about gas mileage (you obviously are, we don't know about the OP), buy a Yaris. Or maybe some cross-country skiis. Or a hot air balloon.
My BMW is a V8 and is raced all summer, still don't care about gas mileage.
Fun fact...they both get the SAME MPG.
I noticed no difference in gas mileage, but once I went from 300rwhp to 350rwhp there was no hooking up in 1st or 2nd with the 4.10s on street tires.
So gears are a preference, I'm actually pleased to be back at 3.42s.
markwaterman, let us know what your budget looks like, it will help sort out what is logical.
Anyways, when the OP states more info, we'll go from there.

This is assuming he needs funds for install, as we don't know his level of mechanical ability.
