Default Wheel Issue!

Well Last night I finally got my rodlites on the car. 15x8's and 15x4's. I had to do some pretty intense grinding on the rear, and very minimal up front. I got it to were it would spin freely and not rub on the caliber. Well when I took it out for a test drive, going straight everything was good. But when I went around a corner there was a nasty grinding, squelling noise. Anyone know WTF could be wrong??

not sure with rodlites but with prostars you have to run a spacer upfront

Your axles slide in and out of the rear end as you go around turns and such. When it happens your rotor and wheel are able to slide a little bit and sometimes touch the brackets. Next time it happens ride the brake and see if the noise goes away. You will more than likely have to shim the caliper and of course make sure the wheels aren't touching the caliper itself when it's happening.

Paint your calipers and drive it around again and see where the paint rubs off.

Edit: All the above of course is assuming the noise is coming from the rear.

yup. its coming from the rear. the fronts are fine.

I'll have to check. Now that you say that I can see it happening. I probably need to grind on them some more.

Just to be clear before you grind your calipers off, there were two possible causes. The first, most common one, is your rotor touching your caliper(s) when it slides in and out. The second is your wheels touching your caliper(s). The point is that your caliper is a fixed piece mounted to the backing plate via bracket. The rotor and wheel are attached to your axle, which is held in place by c-clips, which slide in and out. When they do so they tend to touch.

ok.
but i don't understand the whole caliper touching the rotor issue. If this was an issue wouldn't it do it with the stock wheels on aswell?
And if that really is the issue, not quite sure how your saying i should fix it?? how would i shim it?

Yes it would have done it with stock wheels before you ground your calipers. If that is the issue then you would shim the caliper out so it's more centered on the rotor. Shimming is something like a 32nd or so, depending on how much in/out movement you have on the axle. Since your caliper is fixed when you step on the brakes it grabs the rotor and automatically centers it in the caliper for you so that's why the noise would go away if you ride your brakes through the turn. If the noise doesn't go away if you ride your brakes then it more than likely isn't the issue.

Well I didn't have an issue with my stock wheels...so it must be the wheel hitting the caliper.

Just be careful how much you grind off. Removing the cooling fin's on the caliper is unsafe it could crack or breaks when it gets hot/cold. Its the last thing you want happen.

I grinded off just enough to clear the caliper with prostar and I dont drive the car much, if you plan to drive it all the time probly good to use spacers.

I don't really drive it too often. It used to be my daily, but I just bought a mustang to daily drive and now Im going all out on the TA.
I might price some spacers tho. Im sure a 5/16's spacer will be plenty huh?
