Default Starting problems

Just replaced the starter on my 97 ws6 becuase the old one had been grinding and having trouble turning over the car. Duralast Remy from AZ. With a fully charged battery, the car will turn over until it hits a tight spot, and will stop. If i rotate the crank by hand until it is past the tight spot, and then try to start it again, it will crank fine until it gets to that tight spot again.

Question is, should shimming help this problem? I would want to shim the starter AWAY from the flywheel a little bit correct? Motor has 11:1 CR if that makes any difference. An OEM starter should have no problem turning over an 11:1 motor correct? If shims would help in this situation, what size should i be using? Thanks

Are you sure the starter is seated all the way on the block? If you didn't have any rubbing issues with the old starter, you shouldn't have any with a new one. And a OEM starter will start a 11:1 CR motor no problem.

Well i guess i should give some more background info first. I had driven the car up the road, and when i pulled into my driveway, my dog was in the way, so i reved it to probably 4.5k or so to scare her away. When the car came back down to idle, it started to miss and idle around 400 like it was going to die. So, i shut it off and figured i would come back to it later. About an hour later, i tried cranking it over 4-5 times. All it did was crank. Didnt even sputter. Then, 2hrs later, when some buddies and i were going to go and check for spark, i went to turn it over to check, and the starter grinded. I had never touched the starter before, so it just started grinding.

Now, my new starter doesnt grind, it just cranks real slow and then stops. Almost like the battery is dead, even though its fully charged.

Whats even weirder is why it died in the first place. It had been running perfect, and i reved it to under 5k rpms and it decides to start sputtering.

Any suggestions anyone?

update: After attempting to start the car, i go back under and look at the starter, and the starter gear is stuck out onto the flywheel. This has happened every time i pull the starter and reset it. What does this mean?

Did you shim the starter yet?

It seems my starter gear doesn't want to disengage my flywheel for about 10-15 seconds until I blip the throttle a few times. I think I am going to remove the starter and inspect it. If nothing looks awry, I am going to try and shim it.

woa didnt realize this post had been brought back. ended up not being the starter or the flywheel. The motor had been hydrolocked due to a stuck open injector. I never ended up needing to shim it.

Shims are cheap, so give it a try?

I tried shimming it, didn't help. Ended up getting a new starter and that was the end of it.
