Damn near bottoms them out? As in the springs are almost bottomed out when the valve is all the way open? Have you ever heard of coil bind? You might want to do some measuring before you fire that motor up or you might be pulling it back out and picking up ity bity pieces of engine from everywhere.

Yea, wasn't remembering the term. That's why I told my friend that we need to slap some F/Y LT1 springs on that before he fires it up heh Those TBI heads weren't meant for that B-Body cam, even in it's small size. Which is why it works out with those Vortec heads we're swapping onto it since that L31 cam is just a cunthair smaller then the B-Body's.

If your piecing together a combo that isn't stock you really should have the springs measured to see at what height they reach coil bind. Do not take the advertised number for granted and every spring is slightly different. You're going to want at least .060 before you reach coil bind.

So if you have a .450 lift cam and your springs coil bind at .485 you WILL have spring valve failure(s).

Take your springs to a machine shop and have them measure your springs! They'll tell you you're open and closed spring pressure and what they coil bind at! And you'll find out if you have any bad springs! It's worth the few extra dollars even in a thrown together stock rebuild trust me.

Just remember with a heavy car like yours you "DONT" want a lot of duration, this will bring the power band way up in the rpm range is what you do not want. Stick to a low duration, mid lift cam with a wide lobe separation for the torque. I would not go with more than say the Thunder 224-224 with 114 L.S. provided you have the supporting mods if you want an off the shelf cam, of course you can always go custom with L.E. or others..
