Angry OBD 1 or 2? pic of car!

On my 94 Z28, I've been having trans issues. Everyone said to check the ecm for codes. Check engine light wasnt on. I jumped the 2 prongs in the aldl terminal that according to the manual, would makes the check engine light flash..the fan came on! I'm not totally new to this, I've pulled codes on my '91 K2500 truck. It has a 12 prong connector and 4 terminals inside it. Could this be obd2? My buddy I got it from said he's had it scanned before and it worked like it should have. The only thing is I've never seen an obd1 scanner that was worth anything and I thought all obd2 scanners were 16 prong. Whatcha think guys?

You can't do that on 94+, only works on 93 and before. You need to get a code reader for it, most the OBDI code readers you see in auto parts store use the method you used, so wont work on that 94.

Honestly the best way to go, if you are keeping your car for a while and want to learn more yourself, is get a cable from AKM.com and log your computer yourself on your PC using Datamaster from TTM. The cable will run you about $90 and Andew over at AKM is a great guy. The program Datamaster will give you 20 free logs and then after 20 you will need to purchase a registration code - bout $100 I believe. This will not only tell you the DTC's you are throwing but much more than a traditional scanner as you can monitor your AFR (Air Fuel Ratio), IAC counts, etc... Much better of an option. If you go this route let us know and you can post up your log so we can help you out or just tell us the DTC you are throwing.

You can also use freescan(ITS FREE!). I have had great luck using it. The AKM cable is a awesomely made piece. So for under $100 you can easily pull your own codes.

And if you want the best manual, get the factory service manual. You can find them used on Ebay or other online resellers.

You'd be able to Data Log while you drive to help with tuning it, either by deciphering it yourself or sending in the log to who ever if you get a mail order.

I wonder sometimes....I did this on my 94 camaro several years ago...jumped the appropriate terminals and the SES light flashed the code. It was hard to the decipher the code because it pauses in between numbers.

And most auto parts stores (at least around here) do not scan obd1 cars for free only obd2.

ya i have got used to having to figure out the codes since for a while mine was always coming on. Since i got rid of all the things that kept making it come on it just stays on now. I know which one the old ones are and which one the new ones are.

I guess i need a mail order tune. But it would be really helpful to be able to plug it up to my laptop and read stuff while i drive.

Hmmmm.... I was under the impression that the only year that would flash the codes with the jumper method was 93?
