Default I'm considering a motor swap...

I want to take the old tattered and beat up LT1 that's in my Camaro and swap it out for a brand new LT1 crate motor. What would be the best place to get a good crate motor for the best price?

Haha I would if I had the skill, I'm not exactly the best with cars. The motor that's in it was rebuilt and there's a lot of stuff that was half done...pisses me off.

Don't know where you could find a crate LT1 for cheap, i do remember asking the GM dealer about one awhile back, they quoted me 5800.00 minus intake, for that kind of dough, you could build a NICE 383 stroker.

from what ive seen the LT1 is like the motor time forgot, not old enough to be an easy crate motor and not new enough to be as bad *** as the LS. Your best bet would be to look at sponsors near you and have one of them build you a much better motor based on what you already have rather than drop 6k for a stocker.....just my 2 cents. good luck

Do research and find a machine shop that holds a good reputation and have what you own rebuilt. If you are from the east coast I can recommend one of the best LT1 machine shops around.

I've look around online and found a motor built by Precision that would be a great motor. It was only in the 3,000's.

The wiring isn't too bad.. an Iron 6.0l is easier than a LS2..and a little more durable IMO..

Here is a link to my swap, it'll give you an idea..

Look up getting a crate 355 or 383 LT1 from Golen or Ellwein engines. Pricey, but they look like real nice peices.

You’d probably be best served to pull your engine and hand it to a reputable engine shop locally. They can do a stock re-build reasonably. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to acquire a performance camshaft and roller rocker arms. Don’t forget a new GM Optispark distributor.

What would really improve your car’s performance is a set of exhaust headers. Way easy to install with the engine out. Get any stainless steel set. And it’ll clean up the engine compartment. Use copper header gaskets & ARP stainless 12 point bolts.

Yup, this will cost you some bucks but it won’t break the bank as the shop will re-use the crank & rods.

Unrelated: It’s interesting how many guys recommend you swap in a LS engine. It’s a lot of work but worth it. It doesn’t look like you’re looking to do this much work, you just need/want to freshen up what you have. Nothing wrong with that!

If you are considering that I would do LSx swap also...

I've been wanting to do it to mine, but my shortblock hasn't gone out yet for me to worry about it...

But by the time that happens, I'd probably have invested too much in my LTx to make the switch.

I'd say do an LSx swap
