Default Poll: Short block or machine shop.

What would you do? I have heard all kinds of price ranges for getting a 383 setup done. The wait for the machine shop to work on it, the wait for the shop to assemble it. There are pros and cons to both options. Rather not list them because everyone should know but I can if someone needs to know...

I am looking at blue printed and assembled short blocks ranging from ~$3200-~$3800. 383ci-396ci. No core.

How much is the average machine and assemble?

back when i was pricing all my stuff out i found i could buy say a short from golen for the same price as if i bought everything myself and had the machine shop do the block work. the advantage though was i was able to buy american parts for the same price as the chineese stuff that gets put in most shorts.

I went with a short block instead of rebuilding mine. Mainly though, my stocker was burning coolant so I didn't know if it was real bad or just something minor. I didn't want to roll the dice on rebuilding it only to find that the block or heads could be really damaged.

I'd go with the Compstar internals.

I voted shortblock, only because I bought my 383 short block for 3299.00 and sold my stocker for a 1000.00. That way it ended up only costing me 2500 on a fully forged shortblock from golen with custom grind cam installed. i was quoted almost 4000 to rebuild my stocker, That was reusing crank and rods too. so it pretty much was a no brainer in my situation. Oh also I would spend the extra 100 on the compstar stuff, but I will say my eagle stuff has held up great so far with 7k on the motor now.

If you purchase a short block, unless you spec Compstar, you will get Eagle or Scat. IMHO, the Compstar is of far better quality. Even though the crank is forged in China, it is made to US specs, inspected, and finished in the states. So my vote would be the Compstar, hands down.
