Default Car running hot

well I was driving my car the other day and I noticed that it stays cool when driving around 190 or so but as soon as I stop at a redlight or get in traffic it will start to creep up past 210 and if i sit long enough it will creep up all the way to the two thirds mark. It only does this while I'm sitting still. If I'm moving its fine. also I know for a fact the fans come on also I checked that yesterday.... any ideas...

Stock tuned low speed/high speed fans do not come on until 226/235 degrees respectively. While sitting, it's normal for your car to sit at around 210-230 degrees. As long as it gradually increases and doesn't spike quickly after coming to a stop, there should be no cause for concern. If you want to keep the temps cooler, get a 160 thermostat and have your fans re-tuned or get a manual fan switch.

hmm see I didn't know that. I might get a 160 t stat.... is it a pita to put in? I'll just have to see if I can get it tuned for the fans to come on sooner...
