Default Out the top of out throught the bottom

What are the pros and cons of removing the LT1 engine through the top or dropped out the bottom on a 94 Z28? How long to remove the engine, transfere everything over to a short block and re-install? I have the tools and "ablities" I think. A buddy that is a machanic will be helping me. I want to know how much $$ I should give him for his time (even thought he did not ask for anything).

I've always brought mine out the top, it's easy, but takes a little time. Can have it yanked out in a hour or two.

So would 15hrs sound right to remove the engine, swap all parts onto a short block and put it back in?

Put aside two days if its your first time.

Things almost never go as planned.

It it possible to get it out from the bottom in a garage with a basic set of jacks/stands? Or is the lift pretty much a must.

Put it this way, I got my engine out of BOTH my cars ('99 SS & '97 SS at different times of course) with a cherry picker (to lift the body), a pair of 7-ton jack stands (to hold the body up while I moved the cherry picker of of the way to slide out the engine and trans), and a pair of rhino ramps (to set the back wheels on), and a wooden dolly...all in a 1 car garage with about a foot of space on either side.

So you put the rear on ramps, cherry picked' the front, dropped the motor, dropped the front of the car on jackstands, rolled the engine out?

sounds simple enough.

put the rear on ramps, had the front on stands, disconnected unbolted everything except for the k-member bolts, used the cherry picker to pick up the front (use a heavy duty strap secured to the front of the chassis on both sides), lifted it a little, removed the stands holding up the front, lowered the front onto the dolly, unbolted the k-member bolts, lifted the body up with the cherry picker (slowly...), used the 7-ton jack stands maxed out to hold up the body while I disconnected the cherry picker from the body, moved the cherry picker out of the way, rolled the engine and trans out.
