Default timing problem????

what would cause the opti to fire really retarded, then fire fine, and finally really advanced?

I was trying to crank my car over, and it sounded like it was sparking before the cylinder was hitting tdc, and would push the motor backwards. Then, the car started up and was running fine. But a few seconds later,it dies, and now it sounds like its trying to fire with the exhaust valves open.

I pulled the opti off, and it looks fine on the outside. I haven't taken a look inside it yet.

Looking for any ideas to what may be the problem.

I doubt you could tell if the car was firing retarded or advanced by just listening to it. It's possible for the rotor screws to back out and detach the rotor, but then the car would never fire up, it would diesel a little bit, but not fire. Open up the opti and look for anything awry...
For the future, don't rip out your opti before checking the rest of the ignition system first. You could have bad/corroded/arcing/burn/crossed wires or bad plugs that can cause many symptoms.

Sounds like I was right on the money about the opti. That is why I always recommend that you thread lock the rotor screws on ANY new opti, regardless of brand. The MSD should have a warranty right. A new opti from them with thread locked rotor screws should do you fine. Good luck.

yeah, ss, u always seem to be right on the money. it does have a year warranty, but ive already replaced it thru jegs once, and hopefully, can replace it again. This opti had been on the car less than a week before it effed up, so hopefully, they will exchange it again. Now all I need to do is change the reverse syncro. I dunno if I should do it myself or take it to a tranny shop. Any idea were I can find an exploded view of the t56?

Scroll down about half way. You should find a T56 repair manual.
