x2 the computer is looking for that special resistance from your old key. (assuming you didn't or can't swap tumblers) You can easily bypass vats so your computer stays happy and you can use the key that came with the new column.

mine did what you were describing when my old key's chip was old an worn out. It was not getting a good connection so some times I had to sit and wait for my security light to turn off and try it again.

so you actually pulled the tumbler out of the old column and installed it into the new column to be able to use your original key that you were using before you did the column swap?

If not this is what you need to do to be able to make it work. If you are unable to do this, you can call a locksmith and tell him you need a new key. Give him your original key to test the resistance on the key chip. Tell him that that is the resistance you need. Then give him the key that cam with the column and tell him to cut it to match that one. This will allow you to use the new tumbler and it will make your vats happy by having the correct resistance chip.

lol I should have checked this earlier! Oh well, i came up this fix on my own and am proud of it!

I measured the resistance of the old key and bought a resistor to match, cut the clip off the old column, crimped the resistor into it and plugged it into the car's harness. It worked! And i left the car side of the wiring untouched, i just have to take my old key and have them ket me a new one with the old resistance like you said, and then pull my resistor plug out and hook the wiring back up factory style.

Oh and one more thing. I don't know what kind of trans am it came out of, but it has no radio controls, wich is awsome because i have an aftermarket mp3 player. So it looks alot more clean.

if it works right now that good. But like i said earlier i would get a new key cut to match the new key with the old key resistance. Congratulations on making it work temporarily and getting the new column in.

Thanks!, so do you know of any trans am's that came with no radio controls? I thought maby a m5 firebird, but they guy said it was out of a trans am, and even had a filler panel with a really good looking bird that he just gave me, so im not so sure it was an m5.

so the m5 in wich you are talking about an early model v6 im guessing. And what are you talking about a filler panel? and what did he give you?

I havent personally seen any w/o them but that doesnt mean that there is. I know that GM used to sell the filler panel for camaros that replaced the piece that had the lock switch and the window switches in them. So they might have sold a radio delete piece. No telling

By filler panel i mean the panel between the taillights. It came off the same car as the column, so either it was stuck on an m5 car or the column was put in an m6 car, or an m6 came with the column with no radio controls. It was a 1997. So I guess its possable a 1997 m6 came with that kind of column, ij just never seen it like that before.

Yeah mine had the same as yours if yours was a 1993. It's the only year of that style, 1994-2002 are all the same, so us 1993 guy kinda got the sahft on that one lol. You should be able to buy just the steering wheel and use your column though. The 1993 wheel just looks out of place in the car imo.

the previous owner put a 98 front end, hatch, rear bumper, and and interior on it. To bad that it was originally a firehawk. I cant get the number or anything from SLP since 93 firehawks were recorded on paper and their shop was burnt down and they lost everything. If you dont know your number your screwed for 93
