Fuel Pump Replacement Just wondering, how much would a GM dealership or mechanic shop, charge to replace the fuel pump in a LT1 THE RIGHT WAY.
Thinking about buying a 96Z for a DD that needs a fuel pump, might use the fuel pump issue to talk him down.

If the "RIGHT WAY" to you is to cut a hatch (which is the right way to me
), you'll pay for the cost of the pump and that's it.Here is a finished install I did for a friend.

This solely depends on your version of "THE RIGHT WAY." If the right way to you is dropping the tank, expect to pay $700+ from a reputable shop.
If the "RIGHT WAY" to you is to cut a hatch (which is the right way to me ), you'll pay for the cost of the pump and that's it.

I have cut an access door in my old car and will do the same in the new car.
The right way, per GM, is to drop the rear end and the tank. I figured it would be around 1000 to do it. Gonna use that to try and talk the guy down on this Camaro. Then if I do buy it will will cut an access door in it.

When I changed mine for some reason I thought cutting a hole in the car was a bad thing so i dropped the tank. I got about half way through then decided that I would rather cut 15 holes in the floor than ever think about doing it GM's way again. PITA

I hadn't ever run in to the problem, and didn't think of the access hatch, so I dropped the rear when having to replace the pump for the first time. Never again. I think I'll go ahead and cut everything for any future problems, but I have a couple of questions: How much room is there underneath until hitting something? What dimensions should the cutout be and is it centered?

No, that's the half-assed way to do it. Here's the right way..
For those of you that have done this you know why.
Pretty much judge the pics by the machined grooves in the body. You have about 1" of clearance in most places.
Roll back the carpet, cut.
