306 has more lift, more duration, so bigger. more power. though the sweet spot you should spin it to is probably bigger, 5800 is what Comp Cams recommends but big ones like 306 like going out to 6300-6400ish IIRC.

SO THE 306 WILL HAVE A NICE LOPEY SOUND... AND I CAN RUN MY BEHIVES, 1.6 ROCKERS, AND STOCK LIFTERS...

Stock heads, stock bottom end?
If yes, CC503 hands down.
If portwork will be/has been done on the heads and ARP rod bolts installed, CC306 would be the way to go.
The CC503 is widely known as the largest cam that will work effectively with stock heads. It has a nice lope to it. You'll have a nice meaty power band that pulls to ~6300-6500 rpm with no loss of low end torque.
The CC306 has more potential if you have a bottom end and heads that can properly support it. It will sound nastier too. You have to spin higher to make the most out of a CC306, somewhere in the neighborhood of 6800 rpm (not the best idea for a stock bottom end). Not to mention that you'll sacrifice a little low end torque to gain top end power.
Now if you have a stout 355 w/ ARP rod bolts, CC306, and some ported stock heads...it will be a nice performer.
I went throught the same decision when I wanted to cam my car. Went with the CC503 and I couldn't be happier.

How much for that 847?
The 503 is a good cam, I know a guy in an Impala who ran 12.50s with one. But if you ever want to upgrade your heads whether it be porting or aftermarket, you'll want to switch to a 306 or 847 later on. Do you have any other upgrades? (long tubes, stall, cold air)

lol i am building a stroker with a 306 and expecting about 420ish rwhp, should be good enough for me. the 503 is def better with stock heads. my buddy went 12.9 with 503 and sup. mods

im useing a 503 with afr heads and a 355 it didnt stop making power any untill i redlined on a mustang dyno 444 rwp. i dont know why but the guy who built my motor seemed to like the 503 and i have 0 complaints. hes an engineer for nasa aswell so ill listen to him

my 503 car peaks at 5700, and is DONE FOR by 6300. twisting it any higher just results in more wasted gas, and a slower time at the track.
a 306 has a more "peaky" power band, and the 503 has a much broader power band, albeit, a hair lower.
if you've got an auto and/or stock heads, I'd go with a 503. heads/6spd: 306 and a 4.10 gear.

I have run both of these cams, the cc503 was first on my stock heads and bottom end. It was a great cam and had great DD manners, saw 330rwhp out of it with a mail order tune and midlength headers. Cam pulled great all the way from 2000 all the way to 5700rpm. I then stepped up to LE2 heads and the cc306 with some LT's. Noticed the cc306 started really pulling hard from 3000rpm through redline to 6400rpm. Dynoed at 383rwhp with the combo. Ran a mail order tune on the cc306 combo and did notice some surging between 2000 and 2500rpm whereas the cc503 I had no surging at all.
The cc503 is definately a good choice. I would probably get new replacement comp cams lifters, the cc503 is an XE grind(extreme energy grind) and putting in used/high mileage lifters can mean trouble. I was running CC 986 springs aswell.

Im running the 306 on stock heads now and its doing a fair job. Will need head work for this cam though. Ive got major surge down low but MASSIVE mid to top end range. I busted a 12.97 last time out in TEXAS HEAT wM6 and shifting only at 5700 so it is a good cam. But if u never plan on doing heads than go with something else. Ill be do heads eventually so I went with the 306
