Automatic windows to manual.. What needs to be done?
I am thinking of converting to manual windows because of weight savings and I prefer them over automatic anyway. Plus, I don't feel like dishing out money for new motors (since mine are toast) and have to replace them every so often. So, has anyone here converted to manual windows? What exactly has to be done? Pictures would help
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance! There is no weight savings. Changing the auto for a manual regulator is a PITA. I was about to go that route then decided to just keep them auto. To answer your question, you need a 93-02 f-body driver and passenger manual window regulator and handles, that's it. Good luck finding delete plates for your door handle bezel trim. I have many of these parts available if you need anything, PM me.
The weight savings would be a few pounds if anything at all...I know ever little bit counts, but thats getting ****... A quality motor should last a very long time. I've only had to replace my window motors once, and the car is a '97 with 170k miles.
If you insist, it might be worth it to swap the doors entirely to manual window doors...

Well if it's that much work then I guess it's not worth it, at least not this point in time. I'll just get two new ones. I just wanted to go manual because I've always preferred it..
Quite a few people do it. I had to do it when I replaced my Passenger Door cause someone smashed it.
It's actually pretty easy, if you or anyone is interested chime in and I'll post it up.

The Rails stay the same in the Door, what changes is the complete lifting/lowering mechanism, so when you do it you have to support the Window up.
When you pull the Door Panel off you will see the Window Motor and Arm Assembly riveted in the Door, it will have 4 Rivets. If you look in that area you will see a template for 4 other Rivets that are near where they are currently at, they look like little dimples. You remove the ones that are inplace with the Electric setup, and then remove that whole assembly. Then you drill out the 4 other dimples and then bolt in the Manual Assembly in that area, then install the Window into the Arm. Then pop a hole in your Door Panel and take out the Switches and stuff.
That's pretty much it, it's fairly simple.

Take two people 20 minutes to swap them out. I have done it on my race car. The nice this is someone botched the job changing motors and the holes were all deteriated and the manual windows use a whole different set of holes.
I'm glad you brought this up, I've been trying to find info on it for a while. I'd love to have the drivers side manual and the passenger power (so I don't have to reach over while I'm driving.) But at least the most important window would never quit on you.

So, with the door panel off and looking at the door, I don't have to touch anything on the left side right (assuming that is the rail)? Just the stuff on the right side?
