Default rear mount turbo or in engine bay

i have a 97 z28 and i was wondering which would better a rear mount turbo set up or a regular setup. i have just about every part thats needed for the install. The only thing i need is the oil scavenge pump if im doing rear mount and bigger fuel pump. just wondering which setup would be easier to do. I put a few pics up of my car im new to the forum and camaros. Have had alot of mustangs but found out camaro are faster, cheaper parts, and easier to work on thanks in advance

depends on goals to determine the answer. are you going to fab it up or a shop? are you looking for a kit?

there's a guy who made a site for his own DIY rearmount turbo setup, didn't cost him much if I remember correctly. www.junkyardturbos.com

I've had both, the front mounted setup was MUCH MUCH BETTER.

Fair enough statement. Please give details on exactly why the FM is better, your opinions only. I know the Fm is more efficient but , what else?

Spool time is a HUGE difference, on the rear mount I ran a t70 vs a t76 on the front mount, not having to mess with an oil pump and lines front front to rear, not having to run an intake pipe all the way to the front, sounds MUCH better with a front mount, etc. Rear mount setups work, but for the price that you can get hot parts for a front mounted setup, it's not worth doing a rear mounted setup imo.

Call me weird but I still want to try a rear-mount. Obviously after building the motor for it too... Isn't the biggest issue having the oil pump for the RM turbos revamped to actually be good... lol

The big deal with the different turbo set up is the lack of room in an F-body try putting a large turbo without cutting, fabricating etc. As for the rear mount set up people always talk about "lag" that is because they have not used the proper size turbo,ex. housing etc. you will have a bit of lag but not as some have complained about!
a friend of mine here in vegas and on this board" ZOMBIE" has done hundreds of hours in tunning and testing. his rear mount set up and has excellent results thats has people installing the rear set up https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...ke-graphs.html

https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...0mm-turbo.html

his car is full weight,ac etc at 3860lbs the car consistantly runs 10.1 @ 140+ with a stock cam, stock headed 6.0...the set up keeps the turbo heat away from the engine compartment, less cluttered under the hood.

Cannot forget the full weight, interior, caged Lt1 w/TWINS under the hood most likely the cleanest set up to ever be on Lt1 f-body and having a 6spd behind it makes it even harder to get it run hard due to the boost falling between shifts, car was absolutely SICK!

I personally think the idea is cool for a rear mount set up however, it is not for me i am a front mount type of guy, worked on Grand Nationals for CPP and would fab the front mount first.....Do lots of reasearch on the 2 set ups and build the one that has what you are looking for.

thanks for all the advice. im pretty much using a t3/t4 turbo kit i had for my 85 monte carlo ss i never used it i have every part need to mount it up front i just really wanted to try the rear mount. im have this muffler place fab up the pipe. he said he would do it for 100 to run the cold side intake pipe up to the front. if i do the rear mount should i do a front mount intercooler. i will post up pics of progress.

you will definately want an intercooler, anyone to run a turbo car or build a turbo car should ALWAYS have an intercooler
