Car shutting down

Car shutting down yesterday i went out to start my car to leave for work let it run for 3 min and as i got in it it shut off. I started it back up and drove it to work no problem (20 miles away) As i was going to 1 of the job sites i was stop for road work and while waiting it shut off again. Started right up and was fine. This morning let her run for 3 min and took off for work as i was in the 4 lanes was drivng at 45 mph my car shut off and then my speeddomiter (i'm sure thats not spelled right) acted like it was on crack jump from 45 to 60 to 50 then 55 (as my car was off and costing) Been throwing a code for EGR failure, which would explain for car killing at idoil, Would ERG failure shut down car to while driving?
