Default My Chinese Opti Experience

Some of you might remember this thread:

I Think My Engine is Shot

A couple of months ago I had a problem with my car and during the course of diagnosing it I decided to swap out my MSD distributor for a Chinese Opti from Ebay (the one with the black cover) just to be sure the MSD wasn't the problem. Hey, it seemed like a good deal - $68 and it looked just like an AC Delco unit, WTF right?

So I install it and the car runs fantasic. No problems - that is, for about 1000miles when the problem in the above link happened. Looked high and low and couldn't find what was wrong, but took off the opti and low and behold the BEARING WAS SEIZED in it. This apparently caused my timing to go all over the place, driving my ECM nuts and generally causing every sound imagineable.

For what I paid I won't bother exchanging the Chinese unit. It's not worth the postage and I won't install another one anyway. So I'll take it apart and post pics, just for fun. BTW, outside of the rotor and cap I don't recommend the Chinese optis.

There's a reason why most everyone goes with OEM optisparks and not the foreign garbage.

Does anyone know if the GM opti really has a Mitsubishi logo on the optical sensor? I know Mitsubishi makes it, but is their logo actually on it?

My stock one had the diamond star Mitsubishi logo on it. I saw it when I replaced the stocker (bearing was going out).

Thank you. I bought a used one that is supposed to be a GM unit, so now I know how to check.
