Default Torque question plz..

I'm putting a 96 heads on a 94 block, looked to remember the cyliner heads torque specs in the haynes book on the shelf and was a little confused.

Shouldn't all LT1 Cylinder heads be torqued to 65 ft-lbs ?!! In the haynes it says this :

1995 and earlier : 65 ft-lbs.

1996 through 1997 :
Step 1, all - 22.
Step 2, short bolts - Turn an additional 67 degrees.
Step 2, Medium and long bolts - Turn an additional 80 degrees.

There's a huge difference between 65 and 22 !! Can any one explain to me why 93-95 torque numbers are different? In my case I'm installing 96 heads on a 94 block, so what do I do? Why torques are different in the first place!(Just trying to understand).

Thanks a lot guys.

That depends on the type of bolts you are using. Those procedures are for OEM-style TTY bolts (which can NOT be reused).

If you are using conventional bolts, torque them in sequence in three passes:

1st - 23 ft. lbs.
2nd - 45 ft. lbs.
3rd - 70 ft. lbs.

Thanks for the info, so I shouldn't reuse the bolts from the 96 engine? What is conventional bolts?
I'll buy new bolts if I have to, if that's the case should I follow the numbers you gave me above?
Thanks again.

Definitely do not reuse the OEM bolts.

TTY bolts "stretch" when tightened down to provide the clamping force to the block and are not reusable. Conventional bolts can be reused.

For my heads, I used ARP 134-3601.

Thanks very much. I'll pick up some ARP ones then. How about intake manifold bolts, can they be reused?

We had a good discussion about this on LT1LS1.com

Post #20 is where it begins, quite in-depth stuff.

The later year LT1s spec does show using the torque/angle method for tightening, but the bolts are not TTY. Still, buy some ARP bolts is what I would recommend.
