Default problem found! pics inside

had a couple of post about idle/bogging issue past few weeks..i inspected the wires while on the car and found no issues, but today i decided to go ahead and replace em just for kicks...well..no 6 cyl wire which is hidden behind header looked like this --

my driver side 5 + 7 plugs have aluminum caps that go over the plug wires for exactly this reason..does anyone know where i can order something similiar to protect all my plug wires?

My goodness! Well at least it is a quick fix. Don't know where to get caps? Could you use that heat shield tape?

Why don't you just get sleeves?

yah that rail is only on the driver side, and even if it were on the passenger side, it only protects the wires, not the boots.

These are the sleeves I use on my car. Kinda pricey but they are worth every penny IMO. Haven't had a burnt plug wire in ages...

I have the same sleeves on mine as listed above. They are worth the cost.

that will for sure make you have problems, mostly making it break up and sputter at the higher rpms... one thing you can do to fix it until you get new plug wires is wrap the hell out of it with electrical tape so the electricity wont jumo out and arch on the headers and ect... as long as you wrap it tight it willl drive like it never happened but it wont last forever!!! jake

If what I'm reading in your sig is 8.5mm wires then honestly that is overkill and makes life far more difficult then it needs to be. Because of the larger wires it just makes for a real PITA to try and route them away from the headers. 8mm wires are all you need and they can still fit in the stock location and can be run with headers and you don't have to waste money on sleeves.
I would suggest going with a Taylor 8mm wire or similar...

I did mine when I did my headers. It was a no brainer to run them in the stock location, and with no manifolds or headers install was a breeze.

Hawk40, per your sig, are you running solid core wires?

If so THAT is why you have a miss. Solid Core wires are NOT for computer controlled cars, as they cause MASSIVE EMI/RFI interference, thus causing a ton of issues, of which the missing is the most apparent.

There is no reason to run a solid core wire on a LT1, REGARDLESS, as the cap/rotor is not built to handle the kind of excessive voltage/current that solid core wires can produce. Hell, the amount of spark scatter you get with a CDI iginition box and a high-output coil inside the optispark is unreal with regular resistor core wires.

I personally have dealt with a few cars where people tried solid core wires as a performance upgrade and it is now one of the first things I check for when there is missing/ignition issues.

You were able to run 8.5mm wires through the stock brackets and clamps?

not solid core...the "SC" in my sig is "Super conductor"...the wires i bought to replace them are some cheapo 7.5 mm just to tide me over until i pick the wires i want..i might go with the taylor 8mm but everybody i talk to says the MSD's are much better than taylor..what about the morosos that summit has?

The sleeves work but if to close to the headers it will still burn through. SO be careful still

Mine burned through on the #5 with a sleeve on it. It burned the wire completely in half, but I couldn't see it arcing because of the heat sleeve.

Yea, like mentioned above, heat sleeve works well but it can only do so much. Routing is still important and you need to be careful and think about how it is routed.

I'd like to know what is that makes the MSD's better than Taylor. Don't believe everything you hear. Choosing a brand of spark plug wire is like choosing what fad of clothes to buy. The one thing I like about the Taylor wires is the spark plug end of the wire is not bulky which yields more clearance.

I have heard about quality issues with the Taylors...the ends not being crimped on well, etc. The wire I'm sure is wire, but it's the assembly I think that people have issue with from what I have heard.
