My check engine light is pulled out, will it still throw codes on scanner?

My check engine light is pulled out, will it still throw codes on scanner? Okay my check engine light bulb is taken out,because of no cats/egr. I have a autoxray scanner and it's throwing no codes, does the bulb have to by physically in the socket for the car to even throw codes on my scanner? prob. a stupid question, but Im just not sure.
