Default stock crank-355 and nitrous?

Hey guys so the debate for me is going on.. Between building a 383 or a 355. I was dead set on going with a 383 because I'm a huuuge fan of torque. But now after looking through the "355 dyno numbers" thread.. I never noticed how strong a "little 355" could actually be.

If I were to reuse the stock crank and go with forged rods and pistons. What size nitrous shot would be safe to run? If I can put down 400RWHP on a N/A 355 and then put a bigger shot of spray for fun time I think I might go that way.. Would save me the cash on a forged 383 crank..

It's all up in the air but I'd like some opinons.. I've tried searching myself, maybe I missed something but searching "355 stock crank" doesn't really find you too much.

from what i have read, you can probably run 600 crank hp on stock crank safely. Why not go to Ohio Crankshaft and get a forged 3.480 crank just for peace of mind. I think it was $480.

You should def get some AI heads/cam though. It's going to set you back about $3000 however..

I wish i would have gone the 383 route. I was originally going to use my brand new stock shortblock and just put AI heads on it, but then I realized the way I beat the **** out of my car it probably wouldn't last. For all of the money I spent i could have built a 383 instead of a 355. Oh well...

I pushed mine to just shy of 900 crank hp, I know a few others have hit them with 250-300 shots also without a problem on the stock crank as long as you have good machine work.

I would not be concerned with making some good power on a stock crank. This is the last thing that would concern me rather.

good heads, intake, cam and proper machining / assembly are most important

nothing wrong with 355's they can make awesome power but the question is if saving the $400+ on a forged 3.75" crank is something you won't regret later down the road. more stroke typically means = less required rpm, more torque (peak and average), ability to fully utilize larger cams, etc.

like I previously said though, all dependent on the budget, application, goals, and your personal preference either a 3.48" or 3.75" will get you were you want to be
