Converters are a lot of the times hit or miss.. You could pay 800$ for a brand new converter and it won't act right at all.. Or buy a used one with 10k miles and it hit hard as hell and lock up perfectly.
But yes, if you have the money... Buy new!

Stock a 4l60 cant take much power at all, with my old ss I had bolt ons, 100 shot and nitto dr's. My fist track visit on nitrous went like this:
1st pass (motor)
13.14@106.7 2.06 60 ft
2nd pass (nitrous)
12.39@ 117 2.11 60ft
3rd pass (nitrous)
13.3@112 2.3 60 ft
trans was toast with just 1 n2o pass, 120k on it at the time iirc. After the new stall, built trans, sfi flexplate, cooler and labor it cost me a little over $3k, I swapped that whole set up into the Z in my sig

I cut consistent 1.50-1.52 sixty foots on motor in my current full weight car..
Last car went bottom 1.6s spinning.. I had a 4000 converter and H/C w/ full bolt ons in this car from 100k miles - 116k miles.. Not one single problem.
Have plenty of buddies that have cut mid-high 1.4s (150-200 shots) spraying out of the hole on the initial hit for 100+ passes.
Some people have bad experiences yes.. But for the most part they hold up pretty well from what I have seen.

I had bad luck with mine sadly 101k with just gears, shorties (previous owner) and catback and the front pump on my tranny took a dump. I used it as an excuse to buy a bigger one though. Wishing I didn't now as I'm considering getting rid of my 97 and getting a C5 or something like that
