Question Head gasket question

I was just placing my head gaskets on the cylinder heads surface as a mock up, making sure the machine shop sorted out the eroded parts of the water ports correctly, but only to find out the gasket has only a small hole for the water to go through, yet the head itself has a huge gaping port for the coolant to flow thorugh, and so does the block itself as you all know.

I am really confused about this. I thought they would have been the same size to maximize coolant flow. Is it to control the flow of coolant leaving the heads too son?

Yes, it's a control of the Coolany flowing around, leave them that size, they work well.

Trust me some guy somewhere got paid a shitload of money for that..

I would not alter the gaskets of course, they were made that way for a reason. Just wanted to clarify what it was for.

Its quite a simple yet very smart idea, leaving the coolant in there longer keeping the heads cooler.

One of my water ports has a little pit that was missed by the machine shop, its right at the outer edge towards where the cylinder bolts go through. Water will try to get in between the head and the gasket, but should not anyway since it will all be clamped down flat.

Now since the heads have already been surfaced, I don't want to weld it and get another clean up.

Would I be able to fill it with some high grade extreme temperature silicon, its only 10 thou deep n about 30 though long, just for the extra insurance.

i wouldn't chance it. do you like pulling the intake and heads plus the cost of new gaskets? not trying to be a smart *** but the peace of mind having that fixed before the install is worth a lot to me.
