Default Need Help. Trouble pulling motor from top

So, my buddy and I are on the final part of pulling the motor out. and it's only coming about an inch and a half off of the Tranny and it seems like it's stuck on the tranny still. Does anyone have some insight? I've never taken a motor out of a car, but my buddy has, but his have all been old cars that seem to be easier to work on.

We were going to leave the tranny in, but I'm thinking I may just try dropping it, but could the input shaft be stuck in the engine or what? How do I separate the two?

We removed all 8 tranny bolts, took the motor mounts off the engine block and it rocks back and forth, but it won't come out!

Is it manual or auto? If manual you need to remove the clutch fork.

You just pull outward, that disengages the clutch fork from the throw out bearing

Yea I know alot of writeups do not have that step in there. I dont think its required on the LS1's but you learn from experience. What are you pulling the motor for?

The engine is being replaced because it had blown headgaskets and then I think I spun a bearing or something. But I found a nice Lt1 with 30k that I will be dropping in. I was debating about putting in a new cam and all that, but I think I'll just upgrade to 1.6 rr's and tune it and call it good. I already have the exhaust and intake.

I just need to drive my car again!!! I've been so broke and I never thought that I would attempt to replace an engine by myself, but I am and it's not as hard as I thought so far.

BTW, Since I took out the tranny and engine now, can I drop the engine and tranny in together when the time comes? Will there be clearance?

You should be able to drop both the engine and trans right in, but make sure to get the radiator, accessory and water pump off. You might also have to take the hood off (depends on the engine hoist). I was able to without removing the hood.

Plug the transmission or ATF will spill all over if you have fluid in there.

Lol. Agreed.

No idea why people try the top when the bottoms so easy, but whatever.

I guess, With a lift Id say so. However the last time I pulled mine I didnt have a lift. And with no way to pick the car up 3 foot(at least) toget it out from under the car, The top is much safer.

I pulled mine from the top. The reason for me doing that was that I needed the car to remain as a rolling chasis after the motor was out. I pulled the motor and then pushed the car back out into the driveway so I could use the garage space for working on other stuff during the engine build. Good thing too since the economy tanked and funds got low so it took me 7 months to get the motor done.

It's running like a champ now though. I'm not sure doing it from the top is the best way, but its not really that bad in my opinion.

Taking it out the top was fine for what I'm doing. Plus I couldn't take it from the bottom because I had to leave the headers and exhaust in place. The only way I could take out my headers would be to cut them and I didn't want to have to get them welded back together later. Anyways, the motor and tranny are out now. I checked out the new motor. It looks pretty good, except it's been sitting for a long *** time so , there's some surface rust on the heads where they would meet the intake manifold, but I think I can just sand that off??? Plus I talked down the price of the motor, so I might actually go with a cam, 1.6rr's , and new valve springs.

Why is there rust on aluminum heads? Are you sure this is not an impala motor with iron heads? You shouldnt have rust if its aluminum.

Except for the transmission to motor bolts nothing is really that difficult with coming out the top. I know people swear this way and that, at the end of the day do what is comfortable.

Yeah I did the same thing the first time I went to pull one, forgot the clutch fork, seems to be a common occurrence for people's first pull.

Good point. No, they were aluminum heads!!! I can promise you that. Maybe I was just seeing residue or something. It was kind of dark when I looked at the motor last night. I'm picking it up tomorrow.
