Default Stock or msd optispark?

Gna change out my optispark 2day and found out that it had a msd optispark. The stock 1 cost about 143 and the msd cost 500 dollars. Is there a big difference from the stock optispark or the msd optispark performance wise?

no there is not much difference. where are you finding one for $143. i just bought one for $250 from ebay. I think there have been more people having problems with the MSD more than the OE actually

Did you find the "stock" on at a parts store?

Dont buy that! If you're going to go with a "stock" one make sure it's a genuine GM / Delphi unit.

I got the stocked 1 from autozone. All I had 2 do was give them the bad optispark. And they sold me the stocked 1 for 143. But I got a msd optispark and I candt use the stocked 1 only if I replace a wire

It's not a "stock one" its a cheap chinese ripoff that will probably fail in a couple months at best.

A GM unit is the only way to go.

Hey:

Whats wrong with the MSD opti? Whats the car doing?

How old is the MSD, you may want to see if they will do anything about it.

Also a new MSD cap and rotor may be all you need just remember to loctite the rotor screws on any opti you put back in.

As said above don't by a cheap china made opti they don't last.

Get only a delco/delphi opti and maybe put a MSD cap and rotor on it, when its time to change out the cap and rotor again.

I had a MSD unit on my 94 for over a year, not a moment's problems. Come to think of it, I still have it with an un-used cap & rotor and I'll let it go for a reasonable offer. Later style, cam pin driven.

Just save your money all together and do the LS1 coils conversion.

But really, I am feeling you, I had an MSD on mine also, but the vent system wasnt set up right on it, and the opti went bad, so got a replacement opti from another member on here for a great price. Gonna try to save the MSD cap and rotor and use it first, if that dosent help, then Im gonna put the GM cap and rotor on it. Good luck with the install.

I've been spinning a stock opti to 7200rpm for the last few years (not daily, however) and it's still holding up. Didn't even crack it open to loc-tite the rotor screws.

Going to the LS1 coil setup with the LTCC system is the best idea but you'll still need the Opti Spark to run everything.
