Default Keep picking up 1mph by removing air filter

I've had the car at the track twice within the last 6 months and I did some before/after testing running a clean K&N air filter and no air filter with my factory Ram Air box...

-The first track outing the car went consistent 113.xmph with filter. With filter removed the car went consistent .x.

-The second outing the car went consistent 114.xmph with filter and 115.xmph removed.

DA between runs both days were negligable and the ET differences were minimal, just had changes in MPH. The changes were about a full mph between running a filter and no filter. I didn't think that a clean K&N air filter on a Ram Air setup was restricting a mild heads/cam 350 any? Hopefully there may be some less restrictive air filters out there that I could use for street use. Are any you heads/cam or stroker guys with Ram Air boxes running anything inparticular? I have been pondering testing out an LS1 lid setup especially since I recently took out my front bumper support and plates on the bumper which would really force in some air, not that a mild 350 needs a ton of air flow but maybe worth a shot.

A little extra never hurt and the motor(which is nothing more than a big air pump)will only pull in as much as it needs..The part i like is, there is more fresh air available.

Put a screen in your box to keep out anything large the could pass through the engine and just run that at the track.

Yes, even a clean K&N poses a slight restriction to airflow.
It's a tradeoff, you don't want dirt, sand, rocks or small animals getting in there, do you?

I (and most of people I know who race) run filterless at the track then re-install for the trip home.
I have screens in my hood and intend to leave them there.

Yeah I always re-install it for the ride home. I'm just suprised that a clean hi-flow filter has that effect.

Filter for street, no filter for track.

This is the way to do it. You'll always pick up sans filter.

on a forced induction setup a local GTS viper with a paxton or vortec picked up 60-80rwhp by removing the air filter

You aren't risking your motor running without an air filter at the drag strip. You are only running for short periods of time and for the most part the air is clean.

As long as there's a screen there to catch something large like a bug or whatever, you'll be fine at the track. I wouldn't run it this way on the street though. Too much dust and dirt everywhere.

I always run mine with no filter at the track and there is some horsepower and et to be had by unrestricting your intake. I built a custom airpan using some old tin and rivets, the car picked up 1 tenth and 1.5mph over no filter at all on the maf. I will post some pics of my airpan but I run a 4" VFN hood so it won't work for most setups. If you are worried about dirt rocks or anything into your engine, just steal one of your wife or girlfriends pantyhose and put it over your Maf, old trick. LOL Anytime you get more air in you can get more HP and tq out. My homebuilt, pumpgas 383 ran 127.8mph in a 3450lb car on it's second outing, not even dyno tuned yet. The air was ok (+150')but I plan on running close to 130mph on motor once I get the suspension sorted out. I already bought some adjustable rear shocks to replace the stockers and waiting until after christmas to buy a new set of tires. Later Clint

I believe it. To get over 1000hp means you gotta feed around 100lbs/min of air into the engine. That same amount of air going into the engine has to be sucked through the compressor inlet first. A filter won't make a big difference on a NA setup but it creates a big restriction when going forced induction.

Ive seen it go both ways. Some days at the track my car picks up, and once when I pulled the filter I lost 5mph, like in the final round of the LTXshootout .
Actually last time I was at the track, I tested it both ways and the car went 1mph faster with the filter.
I think it has more to do with the weather, temp and DA of how the car reacts to pulling it.
